Brighten the Corner

Brighten the Corner Nonprofit 501(c)(3) public charity changing the lives of people who are experiencing homelessness. We meet with them where they are, on the street. Thank you.

‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍We provide charitable community services – such as literacy programs for the homeless, and sharing happiness, friendship, live music, nutritious food, water, necessities such as clothing and toiletries – and a sense of dignity and value, for relief of the poor, the distressed, and the underprivileged, particularly homeless people. You are invited to visit our web site at https://Brigh

tenTheCorner.org and our social media pages.
‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍We engage in direct on-the-street outreach to the homeless on a weekly basis. We learn their names and call them by name. We provide hot meals and nutritious snacks. We listen to their concerns; and after we gain their trust, we gently guide them to suitable social services agencies, employment opportunities, and affordable housing options. We also offer to help them with literacy skills.
‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍You can share in this important work of changing lives, by making a donation that will go toward providing nutritious food, water, clothing, shoes, toiletries, padded sleeping mats and pillows, bicycles, other needs, and a sense of dignity and hope.
‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍Even a small donation can do a world of good. Your contributions are tax-deductible as Brighten the Corner is approved by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service as a tax-exempt public charity under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS Code, with public charity status under section 170(b)(1)(A)(iv) of the IRS Code.
‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍As Mother Teresa said, “At the end of life, we are going to be judged on the basis of our love for one another.” We enjoy giving to people who could never repay us. It is truly more blessed to give than to receive.

Brighten the Corner tries to help homeless people get back on their feet. The help we give does not "encourage them to stay on the street" as some critics claim. Check out the blog to find out why.

We give our homeless friends a hand up and try to help them get back on their feet; our help does not encourage them to stay on the street.

Ever wonder why some homeless people don't want to go to a homeless shelter? Check out our new blog to understand their reasoning and how Brighten the Corner is reaching out to them.

We encourage our homeless friends to go to shelters, but we have also come to understand many reasons why they are reluctant to do so.

Unfortunately, critics often try to discourage us from providing friendship, food, clothing, sleeping bags, and other necessities to homeless individuals, by claiming that "homeless people are not worth helping." That idea is not only mistaken, but it is also harmful and unjust.
‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍Every human is made in the image of God and has inherent worth and value, regardless of their circumstances. Homelessness is not a personal choice or a moral failing; it is often the result of systemic issues such as poverty, lack of affordable housing, or lack of access to mental health treatment.
‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍Homeless individuals need and deserve our friendship and encouragement. As human beings, we all need connections and relationships to thrive, and homeless individuals are no exception. A simple act of kindness, such as a smile, a greeting or a conversation, can make a big difference in someone's day and can give them hope.
‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍Of course some homeless individuals struggle with mental health issues or substance abuse or even criminal records. We have seen how having a trustworthy friend who cares about them can make it easier to overcome these difficulties and get back on their feet.
‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍Homeless individuals are often victims of discrimination and stigmatization, and many have lost their ID (or it has been stolen). This can make it hard for them to access services and support, and can further marginalize and isolate them.
‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍At Brighten the Corner, we follow this inspiring concept:: "If you see someone falling behind, walk beside them. If someone is being ignored, find a way to include them. If someone has fallen, lift them up. Always remind people of their worth. One smile, one word of encouragement, one small act of kindness, could mean the world to them."
‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍That is a reminder that we all have a role to play in helping and supporting homeless individuals. By providing practical support and resources, building relationships and connections, treating individuals with dignity and respect, and always reminding them of their worth, we can make a positive impact in their lives and help them to see a path to a better future.
‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍Addressing homelessness is not only about providing practical support and resources, but also about building relationships and connections, treating individuals with dignity and respect and reminding them that they are valuable.
‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍ ‍Again, every human being has inherent worth and value, and homeless individuals are no exception. They deserve our kindness and friendship just as much as anyone else. Brighten the Corner will continue being supportive and encouraging and bringing them hope--and we are seeing many positive results.

A hair stylist is going to the park with us this weekend to give free haircuts for people who are homeless. A haircut can really change how they feel and how others treat them. We were inspired by Jason Schneidman, a celebrity barber who is making a difference for homeless people. See the short video:

Jason Schneidman usually styles the hair of A-List clients. This barber takes his talent to LA's streets, empowering the city's homeless with a free hair cut...

One of our homeless friends recently said, "Even if you could not provide food, blankets, socks, and such things, I would still want you to keep on coming out here because I can see that ya'll really care about us. Your friendship and encouragement is the most important thing." It meant a lot to us to hear that!

We were delighted recently to arrange a reunion of one of our homeless friends with his elderly father. There were tears of joy as they embraced after being estranged for four years. Success stories like this motivate us to keep on trying to reunite homeless people with their families.
