A closer look at the work underway to protect Florida’s reefs. 🪸

The Friends of Manatee Lagoon team recently visited The Reef Institute for a behind‑the‑scenes tour of its living coral biobank and restoration facilities in West Palm Beach. Joined by scientists, educators, and conservation partners from Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse & Museum , Loggerhead Marinelife Center & Palm Beach Atlantic University - PBA , we saw firsthand how collaborative efforts are strengthening the future of Florida’s coral reefs.

Just as coral reefs thrive through countless interconnected organisms working in harmony, conservation in South Florida is powered by a community of dedicated nonprofits, researchers, and volunteers. From coral spawning and growing juvenile corals to safeguarding genetic diversity and preparing corals for long‑term restoration, The Reef Institute’s work reflects how much stronger we are when we learn from one another and combine our expertise.

We’re proud to stand alongside fellow conservation leaders in our region and to support the community network working every day to protect the natural resources that sustain us all.

🌴 Set your watch to island time! 🌊

Join Friends of Manatee Lagoon at Clematis by Night: Margaritaville Memories on Thursday, Sept. 3 at 6pm, in West Palm Beach for a free evening celebrating the music and laid-back spirit of Jimmy Buffett.

We’ll be there with a table alongside other local nonprofits, so stop by and say hello while enjoying live music from The Landsharks Band, tropical fun, games, food and waterfront views.

And there’s a special connection between Buffett’s legacy and the work we do: Jimmy Buffett co-founded Save the Manatee Club in 1981, helping bring national attention to the importance of protecting manatees and their habitats. His passion for these remarkable animals continues to inspire conservation efforts today.

It’s a turtle rodeo!

Sea turtles are some of our most beloved neighbors in Lake Worth Lagoon, and juvenile green turtles use the lagoon’s seagrass patches to forage and shelter from predators.

Merrick Walder joined scientists from Inwater Research Group , who collect data and tag sea turtles throughout Florida to help track the health of local turtle populations.

While it may look dramatic, this is one of the safest ways for scientists to capture the turtles, collect important data, tag them and release them back into the lagoon.
