Haitian Bicameral Letter Call From Congress
As the situation in Haiti escalates, some members of Congress have taken the necessary steps to address these issues. Since Haiti’s de facto government fails to address the worse outbreak of cholera, gang violence, deaths, and hunger in the country, Congress has spoken. Senator Edward J. Markey, Elizabeth Warren, Maxine Waters, Bernie Sanders, and several other congressional members signed a letter calling to President Biden to support the Haitian People’s desire for democratic aspirations and not to support Haitian Prime Minister Henry.
The letter addresses:
1. President Biden must include key Haitian leaders in their discussions of the country’s governance and security
2. When US officials meet with the de facto prime minister and others in the Haitian Tet Kale Party (PHTK) to avoid messaging that might support the narrative that the Biden Administration supports Henry.
3. Make it clear to Henry that the US will not back him as he blocks progress (Refuses to hold an election which has led to protests, violence, blockade of food and humanitarian aid)
4. Given the extreme physical security risks and dire humanitarian crisis, the US should suspend all removals and refrain from returning migrants to Haiti against their will.
5. The US should appoint another Special Envoy for Haiti.
