On June 19th, 1865, enslaved people in Galveston, Texas received word that they were free — two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation had already been signed. Freedom delayed. But never denied.
So today we ask — how will YOU celebrate?
Does it look like a much needed day of rest? Does it look like making your own traditions, cooking your own food, turning up your favorite music a little too loud? Does it look like gathering with your people and just… being?
However you’re celebrating — do it fully. Do it loudly. Do it without apology.
There are so many forces working against Black joy. And yet — here we are. Finding it anyway. There have been so many lemons thrown our way. And yet — lemonade, every single time.
That is the spirit of Juneteenth. That is the spirit of our people.
That is the spirit of Juneteenth. That is the spirit of our people.
Today is not just a holiday. It is a reminder that we are resilient, we are joyful, and we are free to do as we please.
Happy Juneteenth. Go take up space. ❤️🤍💙
