The US has the highest maternal mortality rate of any developed nation. Congress is considering several bills to improve research on infant mortality, maternal death and pregnancy complications. Studying maternal death factors and pregnancy complications can help save lives.

In 1935 Manhattan, young bookkeeper Dottie Krasinsky is living the modern life until a single careless night leaves her unwed, pregnant, and rapidly running out of options. At the same time, her immigrant mother, Rose - who is desperate to ditch 20 years of housework to get back into social activism - discovers she is unexpectedly pregnant, too. As both women wrestle with some pretty unthinkable choices, they're forced to confront their faith, a rapidly changing world, and futures they never planned for.
