Coaches:

I hope that you and your family members are safe and healthy during these challenging times. There is no concrete information available regarding the start of the spring travel soccer season. Our state association, its affiliated members, and other leagues would of course rely upon updates from the Centers for Disease Control and government officials at the state and federal levels to determine any potential change in status relating to the suspension of sanctioned activities. I will keep you posted on any details that come my way.

Please take a look at the video below.

New Jersey Youth Soccer Goal Safety Video – Please keep in mind that at no time should anyone other than an adult be tasked with the responsibility of moving a goal. Goals must be properly weighted-down as demonstrated in this 5-minute video.

As concerned administrators, coaches and parents, we want to remind you all of the seriousness of goal safety. As we have visited several fields throughout our association in recent months, we have seen an alarming number of unsecured or poorly secured soccer goals.

I hope that everyone remains healthy and safe. These are a few exercises that our young players may perform individually during this national state of emergency. They will not need a coach, other players, or a large playing area. I will upload to this YouTube playlist over the next few days additional exercises to isolate technical ex*****on for actions such as cutting while dribbling and running with the ball, shooting, passing, receiving, and re-directing, and juggling.

Coaches often describe, with respect to improving the performance of a youth team, that they endeavor to increase the group’s “speed of play.” This in fact may be broken down to the individual level because a group’s speed of play relies upon the efficiency of each player to continually:
1. observe and be aware of his or her continually changing surroundings
2. recognize available options prior to receiving the ball
3. think-evaluate-decide prior to receiving the ball and as it arrives
4. execute cleanly when it arrives
Many seem to place the greatest emphasis on ex*****on or first touch (area 4), and this is certainly an important consideration. Effectively increasing awareness of opponents, teammates, and openings (area 1), capacity to read the game (area 2), and solve problems (area 3) however, places the player in a most advantageous situation for that first touch. Improvements in area 4 that can be facilitated by highlighting areas 1, 2, and 3 will include the following.
• re-positioning to create a passing lane or space to exploit prior to receiving the ball to allow for more time and space once the ball arrives
• body shape can be properly adjusted as the ball arrives so that it may be seamlessly re-directed toward an opening and/or away from pressure
• the player will have additional time (even if only a few seconds) to concentrate upon the technical mechanics to increase the likelihood of a crisp first touch
The first three areas of focus, will in a sense, enable a player to slow the game down within his or her mind and offer the benefit of additional and incredibly impactful moments to execute cleanly (area 4).
Please access and share the Mindfootballness II video clip shared upon this page, with parents of the players within your respective team/s. The footage with graphics and illustrations points out at various moments the scanning and mobility as a result of this information taken in by Denmark’s Christian Eriksen during a recent match against FA Ireland. This can serve as a useful visual aid as we share these ideas with parents and players.
Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Coaches,

Please check out this brief (3:47) video and share it with the parents of the players within your respective team/s. It was created by Paul Mairs and Richard Shaw, co-authors of Coaching Outside the Box: Changing the Mindset in Youth Soccer, to engage parents in understanding the rationale of why we look to facilitate experiential learning for youth players relating to various positions within the team. Playing various positions allows for children to “develop and unlock their potential, gain insight of the demands of each position, and build overall game intelligence.” It is unfortunate that so many young players are forced to play within the same positions week after week for this will lead to failure in developing important adaptation skills that will be needed at higher levels of the game, particularly during the teenage years.

World-renown coach Jose Mourinho, Manager of Manchester United touches upon this. “They don’t need to specialize at a young age. They need to go through all the situations.”

Claudio Reyna, Director of Football Operations at New York City FC and former U.S. National Team captain described the following. “A lot of teams always play their best players in the center of the field, but I played in central midfield, defensive midfield, on the right, on the left, on the wings, and in the front line. The inclination of our coaches to always put their ‘stars’ in the middle is one reason why our country has a problem finding talented players. It also explains why a lot of young stars fade when they hit a higher level. Only accustomed to PLAYING IN ONE POSITION they can’t adjust to another position, and their careers come to an early end.”

Please continue to provide these growth opportunities to the youth players within our club!

Coaches:

Please consider taking the time to listen to this very informative podcast from The Coaching Journey that features an in-depth interview with Frank Tschan, U.S. Soccer Coach Educator. Coach Tschan clearly describes the direction of U.S. Soccer in terms of the grassroots effort for shaping the future of the sport in our country through better coaching.

Our large nation with its wide diversity of backgrounds and ideas about soccer is often thought of as being a detriment to the implementation of best practices by coaches, however Coach Tschan points to the fact that THE GAME is what binds us all together and this is the same no matter where you go. THE GAME is universal and should therefore be the starting point and backdrop of every single youth training environment. We need to DELIVER THE GAME TO THE PLAYERS!

U.S. Soccer identifies three essential pieces of the playing environment that coaches must strive for in order to most effectively impact changes in behavior and development of the players.

Realistic – Teaching and learning must occur within the context of THE GAME.
Experiential – The most effective way to learn is through PLAYING THE GAME.
Holistic – The addressing of the four pillars (technical, tactical, physical, and psycho-social) must be integrated and applied in THE GAME, not isolated.

The Play-Practice-Play method, is now being looked upon to deliver more of THE GAME to players and for simplifying the process of organizing training sessions for coaches. Coach Tschan highlights some key elements of this new methodology.

Reduced Complexity
Less Coaching
More Playing
Player-Centered

Coach Tschan elaborated upon the coaching aspect of this. “The more thinking a coach does for the players, the less they will have the ability to develop thinking skills on their own. Players should be provided the context within which they will need to perform and be allowed to play freely and make decisions without the distraction of coaches telling them where to go. He continued that “if that means the result is a loss, a goal was scored against us, or we lost possession – let’s start there, explore that, and help the players to understand how they can better solve that problem.” Realistic, Experiential, and Holistic learning for the players “can only come from game environments.”

Please continue to serve as a facilitator and DELIVER THE GAME TO THE PLAYERS within each training session, for there should be no drills or lines of any sort.
