It’s heart season! And what better way to honor Faj than with a little hair band love and spreading kindness. This weekend we will reopen our heartmaking shop and we are ready to take your orders! 5 years ago we formed the Kate Sherwood Foundation with a simple but vital mission- to continue Kate’s commitment to helping students and families in need. Since then, we have been honored to support hundreds of students and families during their toughest moments. The need in our community is still growing and we can’t do it alone. Please consider making a donation to KSF today and as a token of our gratitude, every donor will receive a special heart ornament featuring messages of hope. Phila is a 9-year-old boy who suffered life-threatening burns when he was 6 years-old. Phila’s accident happened in his home country of Eswatini, and he was brought to the states to undergo treatment at Shriners Hospital. He has been receiving incredible care from his loving caregiver, Fikile who left her job and life back home to stay here with Phila. Phila is a determined, patient, joyful, and kind young boy with the most precious soul. Phila and Fikile have experienced the unthinkable and yet they never complain. The funds raised will go directly to helping Phila and Fikile meet their basic needs.

Since we had an outstanding outcome from our last post, I'll be sharing stories about me and my mom the more donations we get.

One of the most memorable ones I can remember is when we were both at the Waterville Valley Ski Academy, and we were going up to the top of the hill into the now dry forest to hike. (This was now in the spring so the snow was long gone). My dad and my brother were off somewhere else so it was just me and my mom. Eventually, after some time hiking through the hill, we decided to head back to the lift. Unfortunately, we had no idea where it was. Like we were basically totally lost. To make matters worse, my moms phone was about dead and I didn't have one yet. We were both freaking out and I honestly thought it was over for me. Luckily I ended up spotting yellow symbols on various trees that led us out, and we both vowed to never go back into that forest. In the end, I'm the hero of the story and we would've never made it out if it wasn't for
me.

Hi, this is Henry Sherwood, Kate Sherwood was my mom. My mom cared a lot about people, and The Kate Sherwood Foundation has helped more than 100 kids over the past 3 years. I'm writing you now because this organization has done a lot of good and we need to raise some money to continue helping others. If you'd consider making a donation to my mom's foundation, I'd really appreciate it.

Friends- We’d like to introduce you to Mazie, a senior at Londonderry High School in NH. Mazie should be graduating this year, but she won’t be. Mazie and her mom are fighting through some really challenging circumstances. Her living situation is tough. Fortunately, Mazie is committed to graduating and will be returning to school in the fall. Not easy. Amazing actually. Mazie’s situation would sideline many of us. Here’s the special thing about her: rather than drop out or get involved with drugs or alcohol, Mazie found a hobby: ceramics. Instant love. Londonderry offers a ceramics class, and it’s pretty much the reason that Mazie has chosen to stay in school. As this school year came to an end, Mazie was worried about losing access to the one thing that brought her so much joy. The thing that helped her cope with everything she has to face each day.

Since ceramics is not a class that is offered through summer school, Mazie’s school counselor approached the KSF to ask if we would donate a gift card to “You’re Fired”, a local pottery making studio. They knew that keeping pottery in her life would help Mazie keep the momentum going and give her access to the one activity that brings her so much peace and joy while she and her mom look for a permanent place to live.

Shout out to Mazie’s school counselor Joanne Ouellette, Colleen West-Coates, and her art teacher, Kelly Halstead. They surprised Mazie with this opportunity last week and blew her socks off. Mazie promises to send pictures of her work over the summer.

Mazie...you are a creative, resilient person and an inspiration to many of us. Way to channel your energy into beautiful things! You are now a part of the Kate Sherwood Foundation community, and we are so excited to see you take these positive steps in your life.

One final shout out to all the art teachers in the world!

Hi friends- We’d like to introduce you to Makayla, a junior at Londonderry High School in NH. Here’s the deal: Makayla is 18 and dealing with a lot of stuff. Some totally normal, some very personal, and some totally not fair. Like so many young adults, she’s been forced to be an adult way too soon. In any event, she’s doing her best to make her way through it all. Sometimes though, she’s turned to substances to get by.

We met her last week because there are some caring and loving adults now in her life. These amazing people see the potential in Makayla. They called us to see if we can help out in some small way. They want Makayla to move away from substances. More importantly, so does Makayla.

This is where it gets awesome: Makayla has a plan. She wants to join the military after highschool and she’s committed to making it happen. That requires that she’s clean and all that. To deal with anxiety and other related feelings, Makayla is going to join a boxing gym. Awesome. The gym is going to cut her a sweet deal so she can be a member for a long time and for our part, we’re covering her members and paying for a bunch of Uber rides so it’s easy for her to get there.

We’ll leave you with a final story that show’s who this kid is: recently, Makayla and some friends went swimming at a local quarry. When they got there, there were some kids already there. Those kids were drinking a several of them were in the water. Some of those kids were having trouble swimming. Makayla, naturally built to serve, saw that these struggling kids were actually in real trouble. Like, they might drown if someone didn’t do something. So she jumped in and rescued them. She saved several lives. Dislocated her shoulder in the process. Others stood and watched. She saved them single handledly. BOSS.

This is the type of person we all want serving our country.

Makayla.. You are a strong, resilient person who has been through so much but you continue to move forward with amazing strength and positivity. You are now a part of the Kate Sherwood Foundation community, and we are so excited to see you take these positive steps in your life.
