In 2024, more than 47,000 stateless people gained citizenship — the highest number in years and a powerful reminder that change is possible.

Yet 4.4 million people around the world still lack that legal recognition, facing barriers to work, education, healthcare, travel, and more.

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency is working with governments worldwide to close gaps in nationality laws and end statelessness for good.
