SEED SOLUTION IS OFFERING FREE SEEDS TO WEST MILFORD AND LOCAL AREA RESIDENTS [email protected]
Seed Solution, a New Jersey based non-profit company specializing in helping people who want nutritious garden vegetables, announced today they are opening their containers to make free seeds available to area residents for local pick up. In past years, these have been available to the public at the West Milford Town Library. However, due to corona virus the library is now closed, and many seed companies, overwhelmed with orders, have told their customers to expect serious shipping delays or are out of stock. Starting seeds is an excellent way to teach children how to produce food, how to care for living things, and the life cycle. Gardens promote health, exercise and nutrition.
There are 2 ways to request these seeds: place your vegetable or herb requests by email to [email protected] OR send a message OR send your seed list to Rebecca Byrne at Seed Solution, 1335 Macopin Road, West Milford, NJ 07480 limited to 10 packets per household. Please include a telephone contact number with your requests, first-come-first serve. We will call you when your seeds are ready for pick-up. A basket will be placed at one of two locations with them on Macopin Road to respect social distancing.
As we are a not-for-profit organization, any donation you would care to make would be very much appreciated. Over 3000 people around the world eat from our seeds. Seed Solution asks you to grow one vegetable overripe for making your own seed stock or donating seed stock back to the library or Seed Solution this fall.
A large variety of certified organic seeds such as tomatoes, lettuces, carrots, spinach, kale, chard, squashes, basil, chives, and other herbs, cucumbers, peas, radishes, peppers, beans etc. are available, in many varieties, on a first-come-first serve basis. There are a FEW flower seeds as well. A variety pack can be assembled for those who just want to try growing seed packets we have on hand. An area seed swap had to be cancelled due to the virus.
Seed Solution was created to keep up the nutrition success of former West Milford 4-H Velveteen Club of Passaic County’s seed bank, created by former Health Officer Murad Yassin. In addition to giving away seed to area residents, food pantries, 4-H Clubs, the Sussex County Poultry Association , the club sent seeds through missionaries, Rotarians, Doctors Without Borders and UMCOR to Liberia, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Guatamala, Nepal, Haiti, Venezuela, and many other countries, promoting food security. The board has decided this year to make these seeds available to area residents due to the pandemic to encourage and promote the wealth of health.
