Let's meet our current graduate students!

Say hello to Bayley Roseman a second-year graduate student. Bayley is studying the distribution of crayfish species and the effect of land use over time in the Potomac watershed.

A fun fact about Bayley is that she can control the tensor tympani muscle in her ear!

Let's meet our current graduate students!

Meet Kayla Aungst, a second-year graduate student studying the behavior response of the Big Sandy Crayfish to dam removal. Kayla has helped out on various trips over the past year including trips to Georgia, Missouri, and Kentucky, while completing classes.

Fun fact about Kayla is that she has visited 37 states!

The crayfish lab is getting a little fishy!

Let's meet our current graduate students! Say hello to Mason Deja! Mason will be conducting research on Bantam sunfish, Banded pygmy sunfish, and Western pirate perch. His research will primarily focus on using otoliths to determine age and growth.

A fun fact about Mason is that he has worked in five different states- IA, ID, IL, MS, and WI.

Congratulations to our 2026 Graduates!!!

WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!

Over 5 years ago, the WLU Crayfish Lab asked for help from our followers regarding a study we were conducting on the distribution of the Blue Crawfish, Cambarus monongalensis. This work is still ongoing, and that 2020 post gave us critical information that helped us learn more about this species. We are back again hoping for some more information from you all! If you have seen one of these crawdads in Southwestern Pennsylvania or West Virginia, please comment on this post or send us a message with the approximate location where you have seen these animals! We are especially interested in observations of this species from the following Pennsylvania Counties: Fayette, Westmoreland, Indiana, Armstrong, Butler, and Lawrence.

This species is a burrower, so it is unlikely to be found in a stream or creek. Instead, they dig underground burrows next to streams or anywhere else where they can reach the water below. They often build structures at the top of their burrows called chimneys (see photo), which are indicative of burrowing crayfish. A few species in our area can make chimneys, but we would love to know if you have also seen these structures!

We appreciate all the information you may have to share with us!

Congratulations to Kaleb Norris for completing his Master's degree and successfully defending his thesis! Kaleb is our final defense this semester, closing us off with an awesome presentation. Kaleb's thesis focuses on "The crayfishes of the Upper Cumberland River Subbasin in Southeastern Kentucky."

Kaleb was supported by Kathryn Ng and Eric Ng, who were previously working in Kentucky for their masters projects. Kaleb completed the last of the requirements for the Kentucky project.

Kaleb, Hannah, and Jaden were with our lab for 6 years. We will miss them all dearly!

Congratulations to Liz Cika for successfully defending her master's thesis! Liz presented on "The impact of stem length on macro invertebrate communities in artificial and naturally occurring Podostemum ceratophyllum."

Although Liz is not directly in our crayfish lab, her primary advisor slot was handed over to Dr. Graham, our Co-PI, after previous professor Dr. Wood found a new placement. Both Dr. Wood and Dr. Graham were here to celebrate Liz today and support her from the audience! Liz has been a wonderful addition to our days and we are so proud of what she has accomplished!

Congratulations to Jaden Rusnak for successfully defending his Masters thesis on "The Conservation Status of Cambarus monongalensis and Lacunicambarus thomai in Pennsylvania." Jaden has been with WLU for 6 years now and will be moving on to his new environmental consulting job right after graduation!

We are very proud of Jaden and the work he has done in the past few years. Please join us in the comments and congratulate him!

On the 18th, students from the West Liberty University Biological Sciences Program attended the yearly WVAS Conference! This year was the 100th meeting of WVAS, and we were honored to be apart of it.

WLU students made up 23/40 total oral presentations that occurred across all universities within the state, with many students presenting posters as well. Both the WLU Crayfish and Herpetology Labs attended this conference. We are so proud of the hard work done within our labs and the dedication presented within our students.

Congratulations to Crayfish Lab Grad student Hannah Holbert and Herpetology Lab Grad student Alyssa Lutz for winning best graduate student oral presentations overall!

Congratulations to our M.S. graduate student Hannah Holbert for successfully passing her thesis defense! Hannah's research focused on the maternal care and life history of the Little Brown Mudbug (Lacunicambarus thomai).

We are very proud of Hannah and cannot wait to see what she does next! Please help us in congratulating her in the comments! 🎉💙
