Defensive Heroics Help Tiger 12U Avenge Earlier Loss to West Jeff
The WL-S Tiger Travel 12U held off a last inning rally by the visiting Golden Gloves from West Jeff in a back-and-forth battle at Kingscreek Ballpark on Tuesday evening.
Trailing 7-4 and down to their final 3 outs, the Golden Gloves opened the sixth inning with a hit batsmen, and back-to-back doubles to trim the Tiger advantage to 7-6. A stolen base put the tying run 70 feet away with no outs.
Tiger Head Coach Chris Anders called for a mound visit to calm his nerves, "To be perfectly honest, I needed to talk to (pitcher) Jack Troyer in that moment. That kid has the poise of a 10-year MLB vet. I don't even remember what we talked about. I just remember feeling reassured that Jack and his infielders had this."
Jack and his infielders did, in fact, have this.
With the infield drawn in, the next batter hit a hot shot to second baseman Benjamin Yeater. Yeater fielded it cleanlly, stared down the runner at third (who decided not to test the Yeater Heater), and recorded the first out of the inning at first.
Troyer struck out the next West Jeff batter on 4 pitches, and the final batter of the game grounded out harmlessly to Ayden Henson, who was playing just his second inning of first base this season.
The Tigers didn't just turn up the heat defensively in the last inning. Defensive excellence has been their calling card all season long. In the 4th inning, the Golden Gloves loaded the bases with just 1 out. A surefire base hit to Kingscreek's massive centerfield appeared ready to flip the game on its head until a diving Braxton Louden swooped in at the last moment to make an incredible catch. He quickly doubled off the runner at second base to end the threat and set the stage for the last inning drama.
Offensively, the Tigers answered West Jeff's 2-run first inning with 2 runs of their own. Hayes Robison hit a leadoff double (pictured) and later scored on an Ozzy Anders hit. Anders stole second and scored on a 2-out RBI single by Troyer.
The Tigers used a 5-run 3rd inning to grab the lead. Yeater set the plate with a leadoff walk, followed by an Isaac Falloon single, a Henson single, a Louden walk, an Anders single, a Troyer walk, and a bases loaded 2-run single by William Roberts.
Louden and Troyer split the pitching duties for the Tigers. Louden struck out 4 over the first 3 innings to earn the win. Troyer scattered 4 hits and whiffed 2 over the final 3 innings to earn the save.
WL-S lost to the Golden Gloves in West Jeff by a score of 6-1 on May 19th. Tuesday night's win is the Tigers' 8th in a row. Their season record sits at 14-2-1, and each opponent that delivered a loss or a tie to the Tigers were defeated by the Tigers in their next matchup.
The Tiger 12U is back in action at Kingscreek Ballpark on Wednesday night. They'll host the Benjamin Logan Raiders 12U for a 6pm contest.
