Celebrating 10 Years of Hope, Healing, and Support!

On Friday, October 16, MHDAS staff had the honor of attending the 10th Anniversary celebration of the Soteria Domestic Violence Shelter, serving Logan and Champaign Counties!

This milestone represents a decade of providing safety, support, and hope to individuals and families impacted by domestic violence. Congratulations to the entire Soteria and New Directions team on this incredible achievement!

A special congratulations to Debbie Brownlee, Director of Soteria House, recipient of this year's Liz Parker Award! Debbie is a beacon of hope for so many experiencing abuse and a fierce advocate for survivors in our community. Through her leadership, vision, and compassion, she has helped create an environment where individuals can find safety, begin healing, and envision a future beyond violence. Her work reflects the power of a community that comes together to meet the needs of its most vulnerable members.

We also want to recognize the amazing staff who pour their hearts into this work every day. Your dedication, compassion, and commitment to those you serve make a lasting difference in the lives of survivors and families throughout our communities.

October is Domestic Violence Prevention Month. Domestic violence can affect anyone, and no one deserves to experience abuse. Help is available, and you are not alone.

The TCN New Directions Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Crisis Center provides a range of essential services, including:
🏠 Emergency shelter through Soteria House
🤝 Case management and support

Growing Recovery, Giving Back to the Community!

The Logan County Jail opened its doors for its annual harvest lunch, bringing together inmates, staff, and community members to celebrate the fruits of a season of hard work. From fresh garden produce to chickens raised on-site, the meal highlighted the impact of a program rooted in responsibility, skill-building, and community connection.

In 2024, Recovery Zone expanded peer recovery services into the jail through IDAT funding from the Logan County Municipal Court, supporting staff time and supplies for the garden and meat chicken projects. By combining peer support with hands-on work, participants have opportunities to build purpose, accountability, and connection while contributing to something bigger than themselves.

Recovery is about more than individual change. It’s also about giving back, rebuilding connections, and creating opportunities for rehabilitation and lasting recovery from mental health and substance use challenges.

Recognizing the signs of a substance use disorder can be an important step toward getting support.

Changes may happen gradually and can look different from person to person.

If you recognize some of these signs in yourself or someone you care about, support is available. Starting a conversation and connecting with the right resources can be a meaningful first step.

Community Connection
I've been married to my husband, Kevin, for nearly 38 years, and together we've raised four sons and are now blessed with ten wonderful grandchildren. Whether we're cheering them on at sporting events, enjoying music, spending time outdoors, camping, fishing, or simply playing at the park, family is at the center of our lives. I also enjoy helping care for my father and spending time with loved ones. Retirement has given me even more opportunities to enjoy these moments.

Why I Serve
Mental health and substance use challenges have touched the lives of people I love. Through those experiences, I saw how difficult it can be for individuals and families to find support and navigate available resources. I joined the Board because I want to help improve access to care and ensure others feel supported during life's most challenging moments.

What I've Learned
One of the biggest lessons I've learned is that no one is truly alone. Many families face these challenges, yet they often don't know where to turn for help. Community education, awareness, and accessible behavioral health services are essential to helping people find hope and healing.

What I Hope to Accomplish
I hope to continue learning about mental health, substance use prevention, treatment, and recovery while serving as a stronger advocate for our community. My goal is to help others feel seen, supported, worthy of care, and connected to the resources they need.

Words to Live By
"Everyone deserves hope. Hope doesn't ignore life's challenges—it reminds us that tomorrow can be better, and that together, our actions can make a difference."

Thank you for your commitment to helping create a healthier, more compassionate community for Logan and Champaign Counties.
