Vehicle Crash, Rte 222, Wyomissing Boro

Rescue 85 was dispatched on mutual aid to Wyomissing for a vehicle crash with unknown injuries on Southbound Rte 222 near the Penn Avenue exit. The crash, which occurred on Thursday morning August 27, was reported as a vehicle into the median. Rescue Engine 85 responded in place of Rescue 85 along with TSFRS Fire Police. Units arrived on location with a single vehicle against the median and the driver out of the vehicle. Western Berks EMS Intermediate Unit 6561 arrived and provided patient care. RE85's crew applied oil dry to a small spill of fluids on the roadway and remained on location with Station 79 for blocking until the vehicle was removed.

Smoke Condition, Penn Ave, Spring Twp

Early in the morning of Thursday August 27, an automatic alarm assignment for a smoke detector activation sent TSFRS Engine 85, Wyomissing Ladder 79 and Western Berks FD Engine 18-2 to a seafood establishment in the 3400 block of Penn Avenue in Spring Township. Rescue Engine 85, already enroute to another incident, was redirected in place of E85. They arrived on location and found the employees evacuated in the parking lot.

E85s crew met with the employees who stated there was smoke in the office area of the building. On entry, members confirmed a smoke condition in the offices at which time the assignment was upgraded to a full structure fire response. As RE85's members began investigating, L79's crew went to the roof to check the HVAC units. A burned motor on an HVAC unit was found and its power secured at the rooftop breaker. L79's crewman then went to the breaker panels in the utility room and secured a breaker for the rooftop unit.

Once the source was confirmed, the assignment was reduced to E85, L79 and L18 for ventilation. The crews set up fans to ventilate the office and protect the food area of the building from smoke infiltration. As such no food was exposed to smoke during the incident. When ventilation was completed, units were returned.

Structure Fire, Windmill Road

An automatic fire alarm turned into the real thing on Sunday morning August 16 at a nursing facility on Windmill Road in the Cornwall Terrace section of the township. Shortly before 8AM a smoke detector alarm was received and dispatched as such, with TSFRS Engine 85, Wyomissing Engine 79 and Western Berks FD Ladder 18 on the call.

However, as units were responding, Berks Communications received an additional call from the facility stating there was fire in the kitchen. Accordingly, the assignment was upgraded to a structure fire which added Shillington Engine 36, Western Berks FD Engine 18-1, Cumru FD Engine 42, Mt. Penn Station 1RIT and Western Berks EMS. Captain 85 verified that the fire was in the main kitchen and not the employee lounge. and that the fire was in a storage room by the main kitchen.

E85 arrived on location and had the next engine to stand by at the hydrant on Windmill Road. The crew met with staff outside who directed them to the main kitchen where they found smoke and burning boxes in a storage closet. As additional members arrived on location they were assigned to work with the staff to address resident status. L79 was assigned to ventilation as E85s crew moved the debris outside and extinguished with the booster line. As smoke did not enter the residential area, occupants were sheltered in place. Normal operations were resumed as ventilation and air monitoring was complete. When all equipment was secured, the assignment was reduced to Chief 85, Deputy 85 and the Fire Marshal’s office.

West Wyomissing Chapel Block Party

On Saturday afternoon August 15, TSFRS personnel participated in a block party sponsored by the West Wyomissing Chapel in the West Wyomissing neighborhood of Spring Township. Members interacted with several neighbors and members of the congregation as a part of this event. Folks stopping by the TSFRS booth were provided with coloring books, pencils and notepads to complement the free backpacks and school supplies provided by the chapel.

Of course, there were fire helmets and fire truck tours too...

Possible Structure Fire on Hillvale Ave

TSFRS was alerted for a possible structure fire on Hillvale Avenue in the Midvale Manor neighborhood of Spring Township on Sunday night August 9. Joining the assignment was Shillington Engine 36, Western Berks FD Engine 18-1 and Ladder 18, Cumru Engine 42, Wyomissing Ladder 79, Western Berks Medic 6512 and Mount Penn Station 1 for RIT. As the Engine and Chief responded, Berks Communications reported one call from the owner reporting an odor of something burning in the basement that smelled like plastic with smoke from one of the beams but no visible fire, and that the occupants were evacuating

E85 arrived at a single dwelling with normal conditions from all sides. E85 obtained its own water supply and began investigating while Chief 85 established Hillvale Avenue Command.

Crews from E85, L18 and L79 observed an odor and haze in the basement and first floor. Command requested E18-1 to stage at the secondary water supply and crews from E36 and RE42 to report to E85. The personnel then isolated the source to a scorched electrical outlet on the first floor. Members opened up around the outlet, secured power to the circuit and confirmed that no extension of fire had occurred. Command placed the incident under control and released all companies with the exception of E85, L79, and L18. Mechanical ventilation and atmospheric monitoring were initiated after which companies were returned.

Working Fire In Wyomissing

Late on Saturday night August 8, TSFRS Engine 85 responded into Wyomissing Borough as part of a mutual aid building fire assignment for a structure fire reported on Edgedale Court in the Wyomissing Hills neighborhood of the borough. Additional information provided on response included multiple calls received. The night was hot and extremely humid.

Wyomissing Ladder 79 arrived on location and reported a working fire and transmitted the 2nd alarm due to extent of fire throughout the structure. The fire was located at the end of a cul-de sac, and E85 assumed first due engine upon arrival with their own water supply from a hydrant in the circle.

Heavy fire involvement presented from the rear and interior of the house. E85s crew stretched an initial 2” attack hoseline to the back corner. Once the line was in place members also stretched a 200 foot 3” hose line to the rear to supply a portable master stream appliance. The crew started attacking all visible fire as a survey revealed that in addition to the fire showing from the rear and side, black smoke and fire were starting to show from the windows from the front and opposite side.

During sizeup it was noted that all doors were locked with no occupants outside and a car in the garage in the basement. Observations of these conditions led to the concern that the home might be occupied. Once all visible fire was knocked down, members relocated to the front and stretched an additional 2" attack line to the 2nd floor for protection while other crews did a search. As this search progressed, Command advised personnel that the residents were likely not home and on vacation.

E85 staff continued to support an extensive overhaul of the building alongside other personnel from neighboring departments. All personnel on location took a beating from the conditions in the building and outside in the humidity. Western Berks and Reading Fire EMS ensured that operating personnel were hydrated and rested. TSFRS operated on scene with additional overhaul until all fire was extinguished at which point E85 was permitted to take up. With the assistance of personnel from other departments, 800’ of 2” hose, 200’ of 3” hose, 200’ of 5” hose and 50’ of 1 ¾” hose were withdrawn and rolled for clean-up back at the station. E85 was among the last units released by command.

9/11 Memorial Ride Visits TSFR

On Friday morning August 7, TSFRS was visited by John Martin and became part of history.

John Martin is a retired fire engineer from the San Bernadino (CA) Fire Department and is riding his bike across America in commemoration of the upcoming 25 year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. The trip has been 6 years in the planning. He embarked on September 11, 2025 and will arrive at the Twin Towers on September 11, 2026.

The trip covers just under 2981 miles, one mile for each victim, including a police K9. A major part of the trip is that John has assembled a collection of dog tags on chains, each one bearing the name of one victim. At mile intervals along the way, John hangs one of the tags on a road sign or some other object. The exception is that those of the 343 deceased FDNY members who perished that day are dropped off at fire stations that John encounters along the way.

TSFRS was honored to be one of those stations, 179 so far. On Friday morning August 7, John stopped by the 85 House and gave us a description of his odyssey and how he would like the tags to be handled. At the conclusion, the tag bearing the name of Daniel J Brethel was formally given to Capt. Jeremy Conner on behalf of all TSFRS members in a brief ceremony in our day room. Daniel Brethel was a Captain on Ladder Company 24 in Manhattan.

At John’s suggestion, Capt. Brethel’s tag will be carried in Engine 85 so that he might be able to run calls with us, as he was unable to finish his last response. As such, the tag is now suspended from the air circulation fan in the cab so that he might be riding back in the officer seat again. As a matter of note, approximately 36 hours later, E85-- with Capt. Brethel riding up front-- was first arriving engine at a working fire in neighboring Wyomissing.

Congratulations to TSFRS Alumni !!!

A few years ago, one of TSFRS's most valuable volunteer members left us for parts south. John Matyasich actively volunteered with TSFRS starting when he was in high school. John then attended the University of New Haven and graduated with a degree in Fire Science with concentrations in Fire Investigation. and Fire Administration.

John was then hired into the Fire Marshals Office in the Milford (GA) FD and was just promoted to Division Chief/Fire Marshal.

Way to go John! Congratulations from your TSFRS family.

TSFRS Supports NATIONAL NIGHT OUT

TSFRS personnel were honored to participate in the annual National Night Out sponsored by our brothers and sisters in blue from the Spring Twp Police, which was held on Tuesday night August 4. As promised, it was a night of fun, food, entertainment, giveaways and hopefully some education. It gave our neighbors an opportunity to see multiple public agencies and servants in a less stressful and more enjoyable atmosphere than frequently happens.

TSFRS took the opportunity to set up our stand with Engine 85 and two tables of free gifts including helmets, coloring books, chip clips, pens pencils and other goodies. More importantly it also allowed us to pass off information how to obtain free smoke detectors and to see the equipment and people that stand ready to protect them 24/7.

Trailer Tire Fire, Rt 222 near Adamstown

On Monday afternoon July 27, TSFRS was dispatched to Rte 222 in the area of the Adamstown exit for a reported truck fire. In addition, Wyomissing FD Engine 79 and Adamstown E11 (Lancaster Co) were also assigned. Cumru Twp Tanker 42 was then special called by Captain 85.

E85 arrived and found the wheels on the truck were on fire and were lightly smoking. The assignment was held to E85 and E79 and personnel wet down the area. Fire Police provided traffic control around the work area. The trailer itself was checked with a thermal imager and was found to be cool, indicating no extension. The trailer was left with the driver who arranged for towing services.

Units were released with no further services rendered.
