We have just learned that Nick Harby, active WALLA member as well as volunteer in many other local organizations, passed away at The Springs while in hospice care on September 29, 2026. A passionate lifetime learner and teacher, Nick's WALLA classes covered topics from the poetry of James Whitcomb Riley to his true specialty, plants and how to grow them. There will be no funeral. More information will appear in the December WALLA newsletter.

Our friends at the Wabash Valley Astronomical Society are hosting a community celestial viewing event on Saturday. Check out their post for details. Thanks to members of the society for this opportunity and for providing presenters for our Fall Session 2026 course "Keep Looking Up," a series of four classes on various outer space topics.

Join us for our last Open House for 2026 at the West Lafayette Observatory, 600 Cumberland, West Lafayette, IN! Rain or shine, we will have a presentation by George Wyncott, "Finding Your Way By The Stars" followed by viewing of celestial objects with our 16 inch telescope in the observatory dome and smaller telescopes outdoors (weather permitting.) Our partners at the Tippecanoe County Historical Association invite you to learn more about local archeology with this free program.

Tomorow! Saturday September 19th from 10am-2pm
join TCHA and Purdue University’s Department of Anthropology to celebrate Indiana Archaeology Month at the Tippecanoe Battlefield and Museum Store.

This all ages event will feature many hands-on activities such as an AtlAtl dart throw, Artifact Show and Tell and Identification, a mini excavation and archaeology activity books.

The Tippecanoe Battlefield Museum will also have free entry.

With only four days left before our Fall Session 2026 registration deadline, you may be wondering where you can get a course brochure and information about how to register for classes. Drop by the WALLA office inside the West Lafayette city hall to pick up a brochure or get assistance from one of our helpful volunteer office staff members. The office is open from 10am to 1pm on weekdays. You can reach staff by phone at (765) 746-2006.

Join the WALLA Button Brigade on Friday, September 18 (6-7 pm) at the The Art Museum of Greater Lafayette for the opening reception for Jinan Kim's Boundaries and Networks: The Power of Lines. Complimentary drinks and hors d'oeuvres will be provided by the Art League. The Art Museum of Greater Lafayette is located at 102 S. 10th St. in Lafayette. There is a free parking lot near the museum entrance and street parking as well.
