Join SAS this Saturday (September 6) at Celery Bog, 7:30am, for a walk around the park, looking for migrants and water. Meet at the first parking lot.

This trip, sponsored by Great Lakes Audubon Society, ends with food and drink and a special raffle. SAS member Alex Kittleson will custom-make a scope adapter for three lucky winners! Today’s feature park is Ross Hills, a Tippecanoe county property located on the west side of the Wabash River. The park features a flat are for easy walking and birding. For those able to walk down and up stairs, there is a trail down to the river bottoms. Birding can be very productive with possible sightings of Canada and Blackburnian Warblers.

This Saturday, May 10, is Global Big Day and the annual Tippecanoe SWCD Native Plant Fest at Ross Camp.

You can spend part of your day birding the park and the plant sale just down the road

Next up in places to bird in Tippecanoe county is Martell Forest, a Purdue property that is open to the public. Filled with trails and walkable roads, Martell is home to many migrant warblers that use the forested lands for summer nesting. American Redstarts can be found all summer along with many Blue-gray Gnatcatchers and the occasional Yellow-throated Warbler. It’s also one of the few properties that host the sometimes skulky Kentucky Warbler.

This Saturday, May 3, join SAS for a Warm-up to the Big Day on May 10. Last year’s walk includes Blue-winged Warbler, Golden-winged Warbler and the before-mentioned Kentucky Warbler. Join us at 7:30am at the Martell main parking lot!

Celery Bog, located in West Lafayette, offers trails through woods and a small lakes, in addition to a staffed nature center. The lake draws in waterfowl during the late winter months while the woods hosts species such as red-bellied woodpeckers, tufted titmice, and Ruby, the resident red-phase screech owl. In prior years, great horned owls have also nested in the park.

Celery Bog has two observation decks over the water, in addition to the feeders outside the nature center. Parking is convenient to the trails.

Yesterday at our booth at Outdoor Explore at Bicentennial Park, we had a couple of Black Vultures flyover. They’re rare in this area, but are expanding their territory northward so you can expect to see more of them. They can be identified by the wedge shaped tail feathers, the silvery wingtip feathers and dark head.

In comparison, Turkey Vultures have straight tail feathers and the silvery color extends completely across the trailing edge of the wing. The red head is also a good ID factor for Turkey Vulture, but immature birds cans have a dark head.
