Looking for a little Halloween magic? 🎃 Conservation Garden Park is getting into the spooky spirit all month long!
 
Stop by during our regular open hours to explore our Halloween displays, follow a seasonal scavenger hunt, and discover a few unexpected surprises tucked throughout the garden. Then, join us on Friday, October 23, from 5–8 PM for Halloween at CGP, a free evening filled with trick-or-treat stations, Halloween and nature-themed crafts, festive games, contests, and plenty of spooky waterwise fun for all ages!
 
Whether you’re here for the Halloween fun, looking for inspiration for your own landscape, or hoping to pick up a few waterwise gardening tips, there’s something for everyone!

Our trees and plants are beginning to put on their seasonal display, with pops of red, gold and orange starting to make their way through the Garden! It’s a beautiful time to visit, take a stroll and enjoy the changing landscape as we head into fall! 🍂🌿

🍂 - Conservation Garden Park in West Jordan, Utah, is aglow in autumn’s golden light, its trees draped in vibrant yellow leaves that make the entire landscape shine. The Park opened to the public in 1999 is celebrating its 26th Anniversary this year. What an incredible milestone!

The 52-acre Conservation Garden Park is a model for efficient use of water in Utah landscapes and empowers communities to make the most of our shared water resources. The Park features a variety of demonstration gardens that showcase waterwise plants and sustainable garden practices.

As fall begins, we’re lucky to still find plenty of vibrant color in the garden! 🍂
 
This is also a great time to start looking for the textures that make a garden interesting throughout the changing seasons. Leaving some spent flower stalks and seed heads standing can provide food and shelter for birds and insects as temperatures drop, while also adding beautiful structure to the garden. And, of course, some can be brought indoors and enjoyed in a dried arrangement! 🌼 It’s just one more reminder that waterwise plants can bring beauty and benefits to your garden all year long!

Bigleaf hydrangeas are a garden favorite, especially on the East Coast, but they can be a little tricky to grow in Utah’s climate. If you love the look of those big, beautiful blooms, there’s another hydrangea that may be a better fit for your landscape: the Panicle Hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata)! 🌸
 
Here are a few reasons we love panicle hydrangeas for Utah gardens:
• They handle our alkaline soil. Unlike bigleaf hydrangeas, which prefer acidic soil, panicle hydrangeas are well adapted to the alkaline soils common here.
• They can handle the sun. Utah’s high-elevation sun can be intense, especially for hydrangeas that prefer afternoon shade. Panicle hydrangeas tolerate full sun and can thrive in our summer heat.
• They’re comfortable with our dry air. Utah’s low humidity can be tough on bigleaf hydrangeas, while panicle hydrangeas are better suited to our dry climate.
• They bloom on new wood. This means their flower buds develop on the current season’s growth, so a late spring frost is less likely to wipe out the season’s blooms.
• They’re more waterwise once established. Panicle hydrangeas can tolerate periods of drought once established, while bigleaf hydrangeas generally need more consistent moisture to perform their best.
 
So, if you’ve been dreaming of hydrangea blooms in your Utah landscape, look to the panicles! Sometimes the best way to get the garden you want is to choose a plant that’s ready to thrive where you live.

Come enjoy the garden like never before at this dusk to dark Halloween event! 🌙 On Friday, October 23rd, 5PM–8 PM, dress up and trick-or-treat your way through enchanting decorations, vote on community-carved pumpkins, and cheer on the dog costume contest. Plus, enjoy other family-friendly activities like nature crafts and spooky scavenger hunts. It’s a free, family-friendly Halloween adventure with a little water conservation magic mixed in!

🎃 Community Pumpkin Contest: Pick up a FREE pumpkin Oct. 12th–17th, carve or paint it at home, and return it by Oct. 22nd to enter!

🐶 Dog Costume Contest: Dress up your pup and enter during our evening event! Guests will vote for their favorites, and winners will be announced that evening. You must be present to win a prize.

🎟️ FREE tickets are required, so grab yours before they’re gone!
