Big news for Utah's social work community. 📢
Select Health's Policy #3 takes effect November 1, 2026, and it could reshape clinical training and access to care across the state. The policy requires a fully licensed, credentialed supervisor to conduct every initial evaluation and treatment-plan change — meaning students and CSWs working toward licensure would lose the ability to bill for and practice these core clinical skills during their supervised training period.
That means:
🔹 Harder field placements for social work students
🔹 Fewer opportunities for CSWs to develop assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning skills
🔹 Longer wait times and reduced capacity for clients seeking care
UTAHSWA is a separate organization from NASW, but this is exactly the kind of issue where we stand together. This isn't about opposing supervision — it's about protecting Utah's behavioral health workforce pipeline and access to care for the clients who need it.
NASW Utah is asking social workers, supervisors, practice owners, and educators to contact Select Health directly and ask them to reconsider.
