Please join us in thanking Concetta Defa for her service as President of Utah Women in Trades.

As Concetta steps down from her role as board President and looks toward her next chapter, her dedication to women in the trades continues. She will remain with UWIT as the instructor for our current Karen Mayne Pre-Apprenticeship Program cohort through graduation.

Concetta has shared her knowledge, experience, and care with women taking their first steps into the skilled trades. From classroom instruction to apprenticeship interview preparation, she has helped our students build confidence and prepare for the opportunities ahead. We are grateful for the time and heart she has invested in UWIT and our students.

Please join us in welcoming Anna Vermouth as UWIT’s new Treasurer!

Anna first joined UWIT as our bookkeeper. While she was helping keep things running behind the scenes, she decided to pursue work in the electrical field. As a member of IBEW Local 354, she’s returning to UWIT in a new role on our board.

Anna brings experience in bookkeeping and financial reporting, along with a personal understanding of what it means to take a step toward a career in the trades. We’re grateful she’s bringing both to this role.

Women are finding their way into the skilled trades, but getting in the door is only part of the story.

A new research brief from Utah State University’s Women & Leadership Project looks at what helps women enter construction careers and what helps them stay. It covers the importance of mentorship, safe and respectful job sites, properly fitting PPE, and support for working parents.

The brief also highlights UWIT’s Karen Mayne Pre-Apprenticeship Program and our partnerships with apprenticeship training centers, including the Utah Electrical Training Alliance. We were glad to welcome one of the researchers into our class throughout the cohort and to see this work published.

If you’re ready to explore a career in the skilled trades, KMPP gives you the opportunity to get hands on, learn directly from the trades, earn industry certifications, and explore apprenticeship pathways before deciding where you want to go.

No construction experience is required, this program is designed to help you get started.

September is National Workforce Development Month, and we get to see what workforce development looks like up close every day.

Through the Karen Mayne Pre-Apprenticeship Program, we watch people learn new skills, discover what they’re capable of, and start building careers that can change their lives and their families’ futures.

We’re grateful for every training partner, contractor, mentor, and supporter who helps us create those opportunities and especially proud of the women who take that first step with us.

When we invest in people, we build stronger communities.
