Moe, Vicki and their group of 10 braved the heat yesterday and ventured up Wittenberg + Cornell. A disappointing high elevation azalea bloom (they were hit by hard freeze and had to refoliate so no blooms).

On their return to Witt they encountered 3 hikers who were out of food and water. They supplied them with what was needed to get out safely.

Memorial Day was certainly a memorable one for eight hikers who enjoyed a relaxed hike and countless birdsong moments. 🥾🐦

Today’s group of adventurous bird lovers, led by our very knowledgeable hike leaders Ira and Karen, traded speed for stillness as they made their way to the summit of Slide Mountain.

As they sauntered, they stopped often to listen, observe, and identify the incredible birds hidden throughout the forest.

These included the Dark-eyed Junco, Black-and-white Warbler, Least Flycatcher, American Redstart, Ovenbird, Black-throated Blue Warbler, Black-throated Green Warbler, Blackburnian Warbler,, Red-eyed Vireo, Blue-headed Vireo, Blackpoll Warbler,, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Hermit Thrush, Magnolia Warbler, Ruffed Grouse, and Yellow-rumped Warbler.

All birds are created equal but the star 🌟of the day — and one that made this day extra memorable - was the special sounds of the Bicknell’s Thrush, a true Catskills treasure.

Sometimes it’s not about reaching the summit but slowing down enough to notice the sounds and sights of the forest.

All eight hikers can now carry on their packs a handmade origami crane, made and shared by Ira and Karen, to proudly announce “I am a birder and I am not shy about it”.

There are many reasons when having a campfire while camping isn’t the best choice—whether regulations prohibit open fires, like above 3,500 feet in the Catskills; conditions are too dry to responsibly have a campfire; or, as is often my case, after a long day of hiking or biking, I’m just too tired to make a fire. Foregoing a campfire doesn’t have to mean that you will sit around all evening in the dark. Here are a couple great campfire alternatives.

The show must go on despite an abysmal forecast.

These two lucky ladies laced up their boots and joined our amazing hike leader, Roger Green, on a trek across the Blackhead Range (Blackhead, Black Dome and Thomas Cole) on Sunday.

The weather was better than an expected with a light drizzle for only a couple of hours. Despite the weather and lack of views, this small but sweet group had a great time conversing, laughing and telling stories.

Sometimes the best hikes aren’t about the views, they are about the people you share the trail with.

If anyone can make a long, wet, cold, rainy day, deep in the mountains, a fun “adventure”, Christopher Garibian can.

These 10 hikers didn’t let Saturday’s dismal forecast cancel their plans for getting the Catskill Six done and moving one step closer to their goals.

Wet clothes, muddy boots AND smiling faces are some serious mountain movers. 💪🏼

Several hikers are now just steps away from completing their 3500 Challenge, and one proudly finished the challenge on Peekamoose Mountain.

Canisters appear on 14 of the trailless peaks that are on the Club tally. When hiking to the peak of Southwest Hunter, Lone, Big Indian, Friday, Rusk, Kaaterskill High Peak, Fir, Balsam Cap, North Dome, Eagle, Sherrill, Vly, Halcott, or Rocky, keep your eyes peeled for this bright orange Canister, which will be bolted to a tree on or near the summit. The sign-ins in the Canisters are not only used for Catskill 3500 Club Membership purposes. The Canisters are placed and maintained by the 3500 Club through an agreement with New York DEC. Here are a few guidelines for Canister etiquette.
