Congrats to Costco workers in Norfolk, VA!
This letter from the leaders of Costco in response to the union win reminds us of something we experienced and learned along our own journey so we thought it would be worth sharing:
Early in our movement, we would hear things from representatives of our employers who would say things like that they treat their employee very well so they didn’t see any need in a union.
However, even in companies with good treatment of employees, workers should always still consider unionization. Employers, while caring, may prioritize profitability and may make decisions against employee interests. Unions enable collective negotiation for fair wages, benefits, and policies, giving employees a voice. They also safeguard against leadership changes or financial challenges that could affect employee treatment. Responsible employers should view unionization positively, promoting open communication, collaboration, and fairness in the workplace. Supporting employees’ union efforts demonstrates a commitment to addressing EVERYONE’S needs.
