In October, 2010, 7 of us traveled to Rwanda to meet the people in the Village of Hope, near Kigali. They were families who had survived the genocide.
We connected to see how we might work together in community. Our first project was sending these two young women to university in Rwanda and we continue to expand our ongoing projects. WBLL members, Dr. Robin DeLuca-Acconi and Liz Gannon-Graydon, co-taught this week’s class for Robin’s course on Human Rights in Social Work at Stony Brook. The session was focused on Chapter 1 of Prentis Hemphill’s book, What It Takes to Heal. It starts with each person envisioning the societies we wish to create. “Without vision we don’t know what to build, just what to knock down.” We led a session where they were invited to create a visual representation of the vision they wished to build, and to share a brief story of their vision.
