Winner of our Leaves of Life Contest
Julia M. Paul’s gut-wrenching poems talk about the death of a child with clarity and brutal honesty. The collection begins and ends with images of a red leaf, one pulled away by the wind, subject to the forces of nature, and the other clinging to the “fragile weavings” of a spider’s web. These images memorialize the experience of a mother whose life and that of her son have been eclipsed by an alien cancer. They frame the context for poems that make ready for death, detailing the “geometry” of pills and the “Green waves of nausea after chemo,” and chronicling how “He curls into a comma / on the couch” or “When you pull over so he can vomit.” The grief is punctuated with memories of a “Hell Boy poster/ with torn corner” and the anatomy of his tattoos: “letters etched on the knuckles / in his brother’s handwriting / spelling out H-O-L-D H-O-P-E.” The author gives us a vocabulary to talk about absence. She names it “Bradley,” the 25-year-old son who is the “shooting star,” “luminous in the dark,” in the “new empty” where she “travel[s] to the edge of his last breath.”

J Brooke's debut book, I Can Tell You The Version That Will Make You Take My Side was released last week by Driftwood Press and is available for purchases: Order from an indie bookstore or order from Amazon.

The book is a collection of themed poems chronicling one q***r person’s evolution and ultimate triumph. Told in two parts, the first part examines the rigidity of gender dynamics within an affluent family intent on portraying traditional roles in order to preserve class status. Part two explores the narrator’s lifelong rejection of societal gender expectations, navigates current politics and media, and reflects on the freedom of a q***r / trans / nonbinary rebirth.

Don’t miss these 90-minute generative workshops

with award-winning poets appearing at POETRY IN THE GARDEN this July!

All workshops run from 3:00-4:30 and are held in the Garden House at Keeler Tavern Museum & History Center, 152 Main Street, Ridgefield, CT

Open to writers of all experience levels/genres!

July 6: “Poetry is all about vocabulary,” says NYS Poet Laureate Emerita Patricia Spears Jones. In this workshop, participants will use vocabulary prompts adapted by Spears Jones to draft poems that use precise, well-placed words to achieve optimal tonal results.

July 13: “In these times of upheaval, poetry can help us convert anger, unrest, and frustration into agency and hope,” says Richard Blanco. Participants in this workshop will read exemplary poems of protest and explore the strategies poets employ to turn outrage into art.

July 20: Sean Thomas Dougherty, a state certified Caregiver and Medtech, will guide participants in reflecting on and narrating their own experience of caring for parents, children, the disabled, those

we love, and perhaps even those who have caused us harm.

July 27: “What does the poem want?” It’s a different question than “what does the POET want?”—and it’s not always the same answer! Cornelius Eady will help participants explore possible answers to the question through a series of examples and exercises.

Fee for each workshop: $125

For student discount (undergrad only), contact: [email protected]

Reserve your space early! Registration limited to 25 participants per workshop. Venmo code in comments.
