💙🖤 End of Watch: K9 Rico EOW: 5/29/26 💙🖤
It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Uno’s Legacy Member #7, retired K9 Rico of the Port Neches Police Department.
Rico served his community with unwavering courage as a dual-purpose Patrol and Narcotics Detection K9 from 2016 to 2023. Throughout his career, he was responsible for major narcotics seizures, criminal apprehensions, and protecting the officers who stood beside him. During one of his final deployments, Rico located a burglary suspect hiding in a closet armed with a fixed-blade knife intended to ambush an officer. Rico’s actions forced the suspect to drop the weapon, undoubtedly saving a life that day.
Last year, Rico’s handler, Sgt. Heilman, reached out to Blue Line Jars for help after a large mass was discovered on Rico’s rib cage. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we were able to fully cover Rico’s surgery through Uno’s Legacy. While the pathology results confirmed cancer, Rico refused to let that diagnosis define him.
Instead, he spent his retirement doing what every hero deserves — being loved by his family, running in the yard when his hips allowed, going camping, and enjoying every moment of the life he worked so hard to earn. He was spoiled rotten, exactly as he should have been.
To Sgt. Heilman and the entire Heilman family, thank you for sharing Rico with your community and for giving him a retirement filled with love, dignity, and comfort. Our hearts are with you during this difficult time.
Thank you for your service, Rico. Your watch has ended, but your legacy will live on through the lives you protected, the officers you stood beside, and the family who loved you.
Run free, sweet boy. We’ll take it from here.
