Day 3 of Pollinator Week: Let’s talk about keystone plants! 🌼🐝
Keystone plants are native plants that support a remarkably large number of pollinators and other wildlife. If you can plant only one native plant, choosing a keystone plant is a great place to start.
Some of the top flowering perennial keystone plants include goldenrods, asters, native sunflowers, Black-eyed Susans and other Rudbeckia family flowers, Joe Pye W**d, milkweeds, and more.
And about goldenrod: it is usually not the cause of fall allergies. Ragweed blooms at the same time, and its tiny, windborne pollen is often the real culprit. Goldenrod pollen is heavier and is carried by insects—which is one reason pollinators love it!
Many goldenrod and aster varieties are well-behaved in the garden, beautiful in bloom, and incredibly valuable for wildlife. Plant one and watch who shows up! 🦋
