Great by 8 Great by 8 is an early childhood collaborative that enhances
the work of the Family Resource Center

Great by 8 is committed to ensuring that all children in West Hartford are successful in school, and physically and emotionally healthy by age 8. To help ensure that young children are successful in school, we are collaborating with schools and community organizations to enroll all children in high-quality preschool. In particular, we are focused on families who live in poverty, since those childr

en are less likely to attend preschool. We are also focused on improving children's social-emotional development; we hold workshops for teachers and families, and are funding some preschools to implement the RULER approach, created by the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. Great by 8 serves as West Hartford's School Readiness Council. In this capacity, Great by 8 is responsible for deciding how to allocate state-funded preschool slots for low-income families. Great by 8 is funded by a grant from the William Caspar Graustein Memorial Fund as a Discovery collaborative, and as such, is comprised of parents, teachers, public school administrators, private program directors, and other community leaders committed to ensuring school success for all students. All members of the community are welcome to attend meetings and participate in discussions.

This intensive nine session series is designed to help parents and professionals gain the skills and knowledge necessary to be effective members of the Planning and Placement Team (PPT). This training series will prepare participants for a variety of roles at the school, district, regional, and state levels.

Dates: June 30
July 2, 7, 9, 14, 16, 21, 23, 28

Classes will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from
9:30 to 11:00

Registration is required!

Ages birth - 4: A literacy program for immigrant families, caregivers, and children. Enjoy stories, songs, crafts, and playtime! All participants will receive new books to take home to build their own home libraries, and families can register for library cards.

Tuesday, 6/3 at 10:30AM. Registration required. In-person registration will take place at the Faxon Branch Library at 6:00pm on Wednesday, May 21.

All West Hartford caregivers of children with special needs are invited to join us for conversation, collaboration and connection. We'll explore common experiences and needs, as well as share local resources.
