I was totally caught off guard when I arrived for my life enrichment session. I expected to be greeted happily by one resident the same way she has greeted me dozens and dozens of times before. She’s always so eager to hold the “babies.” In fact, I always bring one just for her to hold during my entire session. After all, I am told that my sessions are the only activity that she participates in.

But this time, she was angry. She scowled at me. She told me to “get out.” And she shook her head at me in disapproval.

When I tried talking with her to find out why she was so irate, she made it clear she wanted no part of having conversation with me. The only thing she’d say was “this is wrong.”

I kept my distance for the most part as I didn’t want to add to her irritable mood. It was so difficult because I know how much she truly enjoys when the babies visit. I just couldn’t decipher her reasoning for being so enraged.

It wasn’t until I retrieved a baby from another resident and sat down at the table that it instantly became clear what exactly she had wanted the entire time.

She wanted me to hold my own baby. She didn’t want my little one passed off to others. Not this day anyway. She just didn’t have the words to express that want.

In an instant, her mood changed. She began talking to baby and telling me how beautiful he was. She played peek-a-boo and blew kisses. All that anger simply melted away and she was smiling as I held the baby in my arms.

Dementia can be tough sometimes. It’s important to be patient and understanding. Most importantly, we must try to listen to what’s not being said. And on days like this, we must look after our own kids.

One of the most fascinating things about dementia is that a person’s thoughts aren’t always fixed.

Throughout this interaction, there were moments when she believed Jameson was a real baby, followed by moments when she recognized he was a doll. As she noticed different details, her understanding naturally shifted back and forth.

There wasn’t a right or wrong response from me because there wasn’t a script to follow. I simply responded to where she was in that moment. When she questioned whether Jameson was real, I answered honestly. When she wanted to admire him and learn the story behind him, we shared a wonderful conversation.

Some of the most meaningful interactions happen when we stop worrying about having the “perfect” response and simply meet people where they are.

Apparently someone has been treating herself to a spa day!

Today, during my life enrichment session, a participant carefully examined every little detail on baby Molly before confidently announcing that her beautiful little fingernails could only mean one thing: she had to have had a manicure!

I just love the stories and observations these visits inspire. It’s the unexpected conversations like these that make every visit so very special.

Moments like these remind us that communication isn’t always lost. It just looks different sometimes.

As I talked about Alice’s sparkly shoes, earrings, long hair, and other little details, this woman searched for each one, touched it, and showed me she was following right along.

Never underestimate the power of slowing down, engaging with someone, and giving them the opportunity to respond. Sometimes the smallest interactions tell the biggest stories.

Reading words like these means more than I can put into words. This is what AVIVA West Hartford had to share after one of my recent visits:

One of the sweetest moments from this visit happened when a resident started having a full conversation with Malia…in Spanish.

When I explained that I didn’t understand what she was saying, she simply looked at me and said, “That’s okay, she understands. She’s Hispanic.”

She carried on the sweetest conversation while I stood there smiling, knowing I was definitely the one left out of it.

I guess I was the only one who wasn’t bilingual. As it turns out, Malia speaks fluent Spanish…and honestly, who am I to argue?
