Greater Hartford Host Lions Club

Greater Hartford Host Lions Club The Greater Hartford Host Lions Club serves the communities of Hartford and West Hartford.

In 2014 the West Hartford Lions Club, founded in 1946, joined with the Hartford Host Lions Club, founded in 1922, to form the Greater Hartford Host Lions Club. The goal of the club, as in the past, will be "To Serve," but now it will be to an expanded area. Support will continue to be given to such vision organizations as the Low Vision Center in New Britain, Oak Hill School, amd Connecticut Radio

Information Service for the Blind (CRIS). Scholarship programs will focus on graduating seniors who are college bound. Needy children and adults who require eye exams and/or glasses will be helped. The American School for the Deaf (ASD) and Childrens Village wil continue to receive Lions Club support, as will as number of other child and adult organizations.

Congratulations to Bruce Bergman and Sue Bergman, this year’s recipients of the Club’s Outstanding Lion Award and Rose Amanda Freeman Award, respectively. Bruce just celebrated his 50th anniversary as a Lion and is still one of our most active members. Sue, while not a member of the club, is always by his side at club service projects, fundraisers, and events. Congratulations, Bruce & Sue!

Congratulations to Lion Patrick Johnson on becoming a Melvin Jones Fellow in recognition of his exemplary service to his club and the community. Named for Lions International founder Melvin Jones, the Fellowship is the highest honor awarded to Lions members. We had a great time wrapping holiday presents for the students at Oak Hill yesterday. For those who don't know, each year the teachers and staff at Oak Hill raise money to buy gifts for the students, many of whom come from low income families and may not otherwise receive holiday gifts at home. It's truly a wonderful thing that they do and we are glad to help in our own small way.

We had another great morning sorting food at Foodshare yesterday! This is a particularly busy time at Foodshare, between the Thanksgiving holiday and hardship caused by the recent government shutdown. Whatever you do, don't let Mark Seger see you throw away an edible potato!

We had another terrific morning volunteering at Foodshare! This was our first time working at the Wallingford warehouse, now that the Bloomfield facility is closed. What an operation! Glad to see so many staff and volunteers there to help our neighbors in need during these difficult times.
