General John A. Logan—Civil War general, Illinois senator, and national leader of Union veterans—is credited with establishing Memorial Day.
Known as “Black Jack” for his striking appearance and strong leadership, Logan fought in major battles from Vicksburg to Atlanta and rose to the rank of major general.
As Commander‑in‑Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, he issued General Order No. 11 on May 5, 1868, calling for a national day to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers. This transformed early local traditions into what became Decoration Day, now known as Memorial Day.
Inspired in part by his wife Mary’s account of seeing decorated graves in Virginia, Logan helped ensure the nation would honor those who died in service. Today, his legacy lives on through Memorial Day and monuments in Washington, D.C., and Chicago.

DID YOU KNOW?

Before it was called Memorial Day, it was known as Decoration Day!

Following the Civil War, communities across the country gathered to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers, flags, and wreaths. It was an act of mourning, gratitude, and national healing.

The Grand Army of the Republic helped establish and preserve this sacred tradition, and the Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic continue that mission today.

We remember because they deserve to be remembered!

As Memorial Day weekend begins, we pause to remember what this holiday truly means.

Memorial Day is not simply the unofficial start of summer, it is a day set aside to honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation!

For the Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic, remembrance is not just tradition, it is our sacred duty. We carry forward the legacy of those who preserved the Union, defended freedom, and never returned home.

This weekend, may we remember them by name, by sacrifice, and by gratitude!
