☘️ Places People Once Walked Carefully

Across Ireland, certain places in the landscape were approached with particular caution.

Ringforts, lone hawthorn trees, old paths and particular crossings could become associated with the Otherworld through stories repeated within a community. People might avoid disturbing them even when the practical reason for doing so had long been forgotten.

Irish folklore was deeply rooted in geography. A field, tree or mound could carry generations of accumulated stories, turning an otherwise ordinary place into somewhere treated differently.

The landscape was never entirely empty. People knew what had been said about it.
