New gardener in SE Iowa? Here's our list of 10 easy-to-grow-from-seed veggies and herbs for your first garden.
All will be featured at our upcoming Seed Swap and Giveaway! Choose any of these and your success is (almost) guaranteed:
1. Peas – plant in mid-March and eat fresh peas by Mother’s Day. Great for kids and small spaces too. Try “Sugar Snap” pea or “Mammoth Melting Sugar Pod” snow peas.
2. Radishes – easy-peasy and super quick maturity in just 30-40 days. Try “Sparkler”.
3. Cucumbers – direct sow in May, will pump out baby cukes all summer long. Try “Beit Alpha” or we’ve got small space varieties too.
4. Lettuce - cool season crop, quick maturity means successive plantings. Can even be container-grown! Try “Little Gem” or “Red Sails”.
5. Kale – frost-tolerant and attractive too. Kale chips, anyone? Try “Dwarf Siberian”.
6. Beans – no respectable veggie garden is complete without beans. Bonus – kids will eat what they plant. Try “Blue Lake Bush 274” and you can’t go wrong.
7. Zucchini – delicious and versatile, summer squash is a must! Try “Black Beauty”
8. Dill – find a permanent sunny spot and you’ll be rewarded as it reseeds itself year-after-year. Try “Greensleeves”.
9. Parsley – one of the most used herbs world-wide, and attractive in a mixed flower bed. Try “Italian Flat Leaf”.
10. Cilantro – love it or hate it, it’s easy to grow from seed. Try “Slow Bolt” cilantro.
Did we forget your favorite easy-peasy, direct-sown veggie?

SE Iowa tomato lovers -
If you’re already thinking about which luscious tomato variety you’ll grow this year, we invite you to try one of these great companions to deter pests and attract pollinators and beneficial bugs. We’re featuring these top performers at our upcoming Seed Swap and Giveaway!
Borage repels tomato hornworm and cabbage worms and attracts beneficial insects. Its lovely star-shaped blue flowers and immature leaves are edible too! Borage also loves cabbage, squash and strawberries.
Nasturtiums are “trap crops” which attract aphids and squash bugs, but also the beneficial ones like hoverflies, which prey on the bad guys. We love “Jewel Mix” for its cheerful blooms of red, orange and yellow.
Calendula (also known as pot marigold) is an effective natural way to control pests that feast on tomato plants. Direct sow “Pacific Beauty Mix” calendula seed around your tomato transplants, or with cukes, peas or asparagus.
Basil deters white flies and other pests and is said to improve the tomato's flavor and yield. We love “Genovese” for pesto, but basil is so attractive and easy-to-grow that we often plant several varieties.
True marigolds repel aphids and nematodes, probably by their distinctive scent. We like “Mary Helen” Mexican Marigold, a tall variety with large, double, spherical, lemon-yellow inflorescences blooming from June to frost.
In fact, all of these are edible, handsome and hard-working plants that will always be welcome in our garden. Choose these at our upcoming Seed Swap and Giveaway on Saturday 3/5 in Muscatine, and we know you'll agree.
