Beside, teaching them the basic etiquettes of being a lady but we focused mainly on developing them to be advocates, professionals and spokeswomen for the deaf community. So that when the competition ends, we don’t just have one winner but a wealth of resources for the development of the deaf community.

Ten months after Miss Deaf Jamaica, Cassandra Whyte, was crowned Miss Deaf International in the United States, the 23-year old beauty queen with an enthralling smile, arrived Nigeria for the first time Monday, declaring “we are all equal”.

Miss Deaf Jamaica 2010 and Miss Deaf International 2011, Miss Cassandra Whyte, has been quietly making waves since winning the title. She visited several schools to give presentations and motivate Deaf students, and attended workshops on Woman’s and Disability Rights.

Miss Whyte went to Gallaudet University, the only Deaf university of Liberal Art in the world, last month April, where she spoke to young university students and also performed her winning item – Hero by Mariah Carey at the University’s Unity Festival.

Miss Whyte also met the University’s President, Dr. T. Alan Hurwitz.
While at the university, she met and worked with Miss Black Deaf America 2011-2013, Ericka Baylor. Miss Whyte said the experience was wonderful and that she had a great time visiting Washington, D.C and meeting several intelligent Deaf people.

Continuing her tour as Ms. Deaf International 2011, Miss Whyte will be visiting Nigeria in Africa, starting Monday, May 21, 2012 to Monday, May 28, 2012. She will be making courtesy calls to the different government officials, governors and ministries of Nigeria, visiting schools for the Deaf and presenting to Deaf children, Deaf adults and women group in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt.

“I am very excited for this opportunity and can’t wait to see what the real Africa looks like. I am hoping to make an impact on the children and women over there. I can’t wait to meet them!” said Miss Whyte.

In July 2012 when Miss Whyte reign as Miss Deaf International 2011 will be completed, she will be in Ankara, Turkey for the 2012 Miss Deaf International pageant, where she will crown the winner.
