New Incentives

New Incentives We provide small cash incentives to increase childhood vaccinations and cost-effectively save lives.

As a GiveWell top charity, New Incentives is dedicated to doing the most good per dollar donated. We are a US-based NGO that provides small cash incentives to caregivers (totalling approximately US$11) to vaccinate their infants against deadly, yet preventable diseases. We operate in northern Nigeria – a region with one of the lowest childhood vaccination rates in the world.

At Sanniyinnayal PHC in Tambuwal LGA, Sokoto State, Inna brought her twin grandchildren for routine immunization because their mother was ill.

“I personally brought my grandchildren so they could receive their vaccines in time,” she said during the session, adding that she cannot afford to leave them unprotected when other children in the neighborhood are being vaccinated.

Across communities, thoughtful caregivers and family members like Inna continue to play an important role in ensuring children receive life-saving vaccines on time.

We recently completed over 100 interviews for a stakeholder sentiment survey. Program Manager Kirsten Bunkeddeko recently nominated Stakeholder Relations Manager Theophilus Songo and Senior States Partnerships Manager Abdulwahab Yusuf for the Staff Shout-Out after they "conducted a series of high-quality stakeholder survey visits." Thank you both for your commitment to building relationships and gathering honest feedback!

A randomized controlled trial (RCT) is a starting point, not a finish line.

As a program scales, understanding its real-world impact requires ongoing measurement. Last year, New Incentives conducted over 26,000 household surveys across 13 states to track vaccination coverage at the household level. Our newest blog explains the methodology behind that work.

At New Incentives, being data-driven isn’t an option. It’s in our DNA. That’s why we collect high-quality, verifiable data to inform program decisions. We conduct vaccination coverage surveys, known internally as rapid assessments, to measure routine immunization coverage and health-seeking be...

Three themes came up in nearly every conversation we had at Skoll Week in April: how to close the gap between use and access at the last mile, what it actually takes to measure coverage at the household level, and whether existing delivery infrastructure can carry additional interventions. These aren’t new questions, but the energy around them feels different: better tools, more rigorous evidence, and sharper focus. We are grateful for the conversations and came home with a lot to think about.

Scaling a program is easy to talk about. Scaling one without compromising quality is a different story.

In this presentation at EA Global London, our CEO Svetha Janumpalli walks through the pivots and failures behind New Incentives' growth—and what fidelity to cost-effectiveness actually demands. Since she gave this talk in 2023, we've enrolled another 5 million infants.

Our Stakeholder Relations Officers continue to strengthen collaboration with government partners through targeted engagements in Kano State.

During a recent visit, the team met with Alhaji Baffa Tajo Gaya, Primary Healthcare Coordinator for Gaya LGA in Kano State, to share updates on the All Babies program and ongoing activities supporting routine immunization.

He acknowledged the program’s impact and provided practical feedback to strengthen operations and improve coordination at the facility level.

These engagements remain central to sustaining strong partnerships and supporting routine immunization across the states.

In March, the All Babies team met with Gombe State's Deputy Governor, Dr. Manasseh Daniel Jatau, to review progress in routine immunization and discuss how to reach more children.

Since launching in Gombe, over 396,000 caregivers have been enrolled in the All Babies program, with ₦2.5 billion disbursed to support completion of immunization visits. The state has also recorded improvements in BCG, Penta 1, and Measles 2 coverage.

The Deputy Governor reaffirmed the state's commitment to sustaining immunization efforts through continued engagement with traditional and religious leaders.

In his Staff Shout-Out nomination, States Partnerships Manager Retshak Gunen praised Supply-Side Officer Rufai Isah for effectively monitoring the supply of vaccines in two states—Kano, where he usually works, and Kebbi, where he covered a temporary staff gap. "Despite the increased workload, he maintained diligence in investigating stockouts, accurately identifying false alarms, and conducting detailed follow-ups to prevent recurrence. His commitment to maintaining data integrity and service continuity under pressure makes him a strong role model."

! About a year ago, we shared one of our more popular blog posts: "An Immunization Day at a Clinic in Kebbi, Nigeria." Millions of children in Nigeria miss routine vaccinations every year. But on one day at one clinic in Kebbi, a health worker named Mustapha, a mother named Tsaibatu, and a field officer named Sanusi showed what closing that gap actually looks like in northern Nigeria.
