Earth Day is a good reminder that some of the most important places are easy to miss.

Last week’s walk at Welles Preserve followed the shift from daylight into dusk—right when the vernal pools come alive. Frogs calling, salamanders moving, and a whole ecosystem that depends on both land and water, all happening in a small, seasonal window.

Now Accepting Scholarship Applications

The Cornwall Conservation Trust’s mission is to help preserve Cornwall’s unique rural and agricultural character. It does this through either acquiring land or promoting the use of easements on private land to protect areas of special natural resources, habitats, or views from development. We recognize our success depends upon an educated and aware public. It is the strength of this partnership that will ultimately determine Cornwall’s future landscape.

In an effort to promote education in areas of study that match this mission, the Cornwall Conservation Trust is offering student grants. The grants will be awarded to students who will be enrolled in college for the 2026-2027 academic year and who are residents of Region One. Preference will be given to Cornwall residents. The grants will be paid on receipt of evidence that the students are enrolled at and attending college.

Students applying for the grants should show more than average concern for the environment and be pursuing a degree in environmental studies/sciences. They will be asked to list any farm, forestry, or FFA activities, environmental/ecological, botanical, or biological studies or activities.

Copies of the application form, including an online form, are available on our website: https://cornwallconservationtrust.org/student-grants/. Completed forms must be returned by May 1. Select applicants will be interviewed and the awards announced by mid-June.

A Field Trip to the Welles Preserve’s Vernal Pools
Saturday, April 18 at 7pm

Sunset on April 18, is at 7:38 with astronomical twilight occurring between 8:30 and 9:00, thus the program start of 7pm allows for a bit of daylight before getting situated near the pools as twilight kicks in.

The program begins with a glance at some of the amphibian species (frogs and salamanders) found in Cornwall. Images will help us identify key characteristics, but we’ll also share some of the habitats, sounds and stories of how they live and survive.

We will discuss the connection between land and water for amphibians, and how they depend on the two habitats, and live two lives because of their metamorphosis. Protecting them requires preserving both habitats. We will discuss how roads separate these two habitats, and the problem of how road salt, oil, and other road materials affect amphibians. We will consider the reasons some amphibians use vernal pools versus other wetlands and why species tend to be very habitat specific.

Please wear shoes or boots that can get wet and muddy. No one should wear bug spray, scented hand cream, or have any chemicals on their hands. Dress warmly. Bring a flashlight.

Meet at Welles Preserve, parking area located on Town Street in Cornwall, 4/10 of a mile from the intersection with Route 128.

Suitable for ages 10 and older. Space is limited. RSVP to [email protected], for details.

This event is sponsored by the Cornwall Conservation Trust and the Cornwall Conservation Commission.
