A Field Trip to the Welles Preserve’s Vernal Pools
Saturday, April 18 at 7pm
Sunset on April 18, is at 7:38 with astronomical twilight occurring between 8:30 and 9:00, thus the program start of 7pm allows for a bit of daylight before getting situated near the pools as twilight kicks in.
The program begins with a glance at some of the amphibian species (frogs and salamanders) found in Cornwall. Images will help us identify key characteristics, but we’ll also share some of the habitats, sounds and stories of how they live and survive.
We will discuss the connection between land and water for amphibians, and how they depend on the two habitats, and live two lives because of their metamorphosis. Protecting them requires preserving both habitats. We will discuss how roads separate these two habitats, and the problem of how road salt, oil, and other road materials affect amphibians. We will consider the reasons some amphibians use vernal pools versus other wetlands and why species tend to be very habitat specific.
Please wear shoes or boots that can get wet and muddy. No one should wear bug spray, scented hand cream, or have any chemicals on their hands. Dress warmly. Bring a flashlight.
Meet at Welles Preserve, parking area located on Town Street in Cornwall, 4/10 of a mile from the intersection with Route 128.
Suitable for ages 10 and older. Space is limited. RSVP to [email protected], for details.
This event is sponsored by the Cornwall Conservation Trust and the Cornwall Conservation Commission.
