AI is booming. Women are underrepresented and falling through the cracks.

Women made up only about 25% of new hires in AI positions over the last year, compared with 50% of new hires in non-AI roles, according to a recent report from LinkedIn. In executive roles, that number drops to just 13%. Simultaneously, women are more likely to work in roles with high exposure to AI disruption, such as customer service, meaning they are also at higher risk for job loss due to AI. AI jobs often come with salaries that are twice as high as non-AI jobs, but women are disproportionately represented in lower paid AI jobs with titles like "data annotators." Within AI jobs, men receive $45,000 higher median pay than women.

Women have been underrepresented in the tech industry for years. Only about one-third of jobs in the tech industry are held by women. Citing reasons such as non-inclusive environments and barriers toward promotion, women who do get into technology jobs leave the industry at much higher rates than men. Now that diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives and mentorship programs are discouraged, women are having a harder time breaking into the industry. Companies are hiring for AI roles at a breakneck speed and often rely on male-dominated personal networks to find candidates.
