New research involving scientists from Stroud Water Research Center found microplastics in aquatic insects collected from streams throughout the Schuylkill River watershed, including in both urban and forested areas.

As Stroud senior research scientist and study co-author John Jackson explains, โ€œItโ€™s a really good illustration, or a reminder, that everything we do in a watershed, whether itโ€™s on the land or in our wastewater, whatever weโ€™re releasing into the environment, it often just ends up in our water.โ€

Itโ€™s an important reminder of how closely connected our land and waterways are, and why thoughtful stewardship of both matters. ๐ŸŒฟ

Read more about the research in this WHYY article: https://bit.ly/3UfWdDB

The researchers found that microplastics were as prevalent in forested parts of the watershed as they were in urban areas.

Just beyond the Village of Marshallton, Stroud Preserve offers a beautiful example of what thoughtful land conservation can mean for generations to come.

What began with Dr. Morris Stroudโ€™s donation of 332 acres to Natural Lands in 1990 has grown to nearly twice that size through additional land donations and the preservation of neighboring properties.

Places like Stroud Preserve remind us that protecting open space is a long-term commitment, made possible through the vision and generosity of landowners and the dedicated work of conservation organizations, municipalities, and community partners.

We are grateful to Natural Lands and all those working throughout Chester County to protect the fields, forests, waterways, and rural landscapes that define our region and enrich the places we call home. ๐Ÿ’š

Stroud Preserve was once part of the Laird farm, a massive tract that stretched from the city of West Chester west to Wawaset Road. The Laird family raised beef cattle and, later, the Stroud family used the farm to train Labrador Retrievers.

In 1990, Dr. Morris Stroud donated his 332-acre Georgia farm to Natural Lands, establishing Stroud Preserve. Since then, the preserve has nearly doubled in size through additional donations and purchases of neighboring properties.

Few sights capture the magic of a Marshallton summer quite like fireflies dancing across fields and backyards at dusk. But did you know those tiny flashes of light are more than just beautiful? They're an essential part of a firefly's mating ritual, and excessive outdoor lighting can make it difficult for them to find one another. Penn State Extension explains how habitat loss, pesticides, and light pollution are contributing to declining firefly populations, while also sharing simple steps we can all take to help keep their glow alive for generations to come.

Take a few minutes to enjoy this fascinating article, then step outside tonight, turn off unnecessary lights, and see if you can spot nature's own summer fireworks.

From the gentle glow of fireflies to the chorus of crickets and a sky filled with stars, summer evenings remind us why preserving the rural character of our village matters.

As we spend more time outdoors this summer, it's also a good time to think about how the light we use after dark affects the world around us. Excessive or poorly directed outdoor lighting can disrupt migrating birds, fireflies, bats, pollinators, and even the plants that depend on them. The good news? A few simple changes, like using warmer bulbs, shielding outdoor fixtures, and turning off unnecessary lights, can make a meaningful difference.

Light pollution doesnโ€™t just block our view of the night skyโ€”it has tangible consequences for people and wildlife alike. For humans, exposure to artificial light at night can disrupt circadian rhythms, making it more difficult to sleep and potentially affecting long-term health. For wildlife, th...
