Volunteer Spotlight: Raquel Avery
“I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to be considered for this honor. I’m a hardworking and dependable mom to two adult children who takes pride in everything I do. I’ve been with the YMWIC Foundation UDUB (Upper Darby Chapter) for two and a half years. As a parent, I’m especially proud to see my son, Tayvion, surrounded by and recognized for his scholastic achievements. He started out as a Jupiter Scholar, and I’ve seen how this program has allowed him to improve his self-confidence through public speaking and building friendships. This experience has also encouraged him to believe more in himself, take pride in his accomplishments, and continue to strive for excellence.
When I joined this program, I honestly didn’t know what to expect. I saw an opportunity to become more involved in something that means so much to me—my child’s education and future. I started volunteering whenever there were special events, whether it was helping behind the scenes or simply being there when needed. I also enjoyed several community projects through the YMWIC Foundation, such as the Philadelphia Horticultural Society, our local YMCA community food drive, food pantry, and planting vegetables at the Chester Food Bank. I believe my involvement has shaped my child’s confidence, success, and future. I feel proud to continue giving my support to the program and the Scholars.
My advice to all parents:
Your involvement can make a difference in your child’s academic journey toward success. Your presence at workshops and community support would encourage them to feel that they are valued and loved. It would also motivate them to do their best. Parents, let’s pay it forward by supporting the Project Coordinators and this program. It’s all about showing up, listening, encouraging, and making sure your child knows they are supported every step of the way. This can boost morale and contribute to a healthier, happier, more confident, and successful future for them. My commitment is to continue to support the program and the Scholars.”
