In §9338 Swedenborg is unpacking a single phrase — "inherit the land." Read literally it's about territory and conquest, but he takes "inheriting the land" to mean receiving heaven, being held in goodness, being spiritually reborn. To draw that out he reaches for a line in Revelation about those who "conquer," and redefines the battle entirely: the only conquering that matters is inward. Evil is overcome by goodness, falsity by truth — that's the war, and those are the weapons.

"Righteous" has picked up a slightly sour flavor — we half-hear self-righteous, the person who's sure they're good. In Swedenborg's day it carried a different assumption: that the righteous were those who held the right faith, faith alone being what saved you. §9263.2 pushes back on that. The righteous, he says, aren't marked by correct belief at all — they're the people the Lord fills with genuine kindness toward their neighbor. Faith mattered to him, but on its own, he argues, it was never what made anyone righteous.

"And do not kill the innocent and righteous" (Exodus 23:7) sounds like plain moral common sense. But in §9262.2 Swedenborg reads "innocent" and "righteous" as two kinds of goodness — inner and outer — and then goes further: goodness isn't good unless it contains innocence. And innocence, in his sense, isn't naïveté. It's the openness to receive — his idea that the good we carry isn't manufactured by us but flows through us. Goodness becomes good, in other words, when it stops taking credit.
