This LGBTQ History Month, we celebrate Barbara Gittings (1932–2007). 🏳️‍🌈

Barbara was a pioneering activist who spent decades fighting for LGBTQ equality. In 1972, she helped push the American Psychiatric Association to rethink its classification of homosexuality as a mental illness, and in 1973 the APA removed it from its manual. She also led the way in making libraries more inclusive through her work with the American Library Association.

She believed that “Gay is good — for the individual and for society,” and her courage helped change minds and lives.
Her legacy has special roots in our own backyard: Barbara spent her later years in Kennett Square, Chester County.
Let’s keep honoring those who paved the way by continuing the work. 💛

Hey Chester County - Election Day is Tuesday, November 3rd! 🗳️

Local elections matter. School boards, county commissioners, and state legislators shape our daily lives. Even candidates in the same party can differ on key issues, so know where each one stands before you vote.

Here’s what to do:

1. Check your registration at Vote411.org/PFLAG - especially if you’ve moved, changed your name, or haven’t voted in a while. Deadline: October 19th.
2. Get informed. Look up where candidates stand on Vote411.org - don’t vote on name recognition alone.
3. Make your plan to vote. You can request a mail-in ballot - apply by October 27th - but we strongly recommend requesting, completing, and returning it as early as possible rather than waiting until the deadline. Or vote in person on Election Day, November 3rd, when polls are open 7am–8pm. If you’re in line by 8pm, stay in line - you’re still entitled to vote!

October is LGBTQ History Month 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

“I did not change from man to woman. I became myself.” — Christine Jorgensen (1926–1989)

In 1952, Christine Jorgensen became one of the first widely known transgender women in the United States when her story made headlines around the world. A Bronx native and U.S. Army veteran, she faced intense media scrutiny, but she met it with grace, humor, and honesty. She used her platform to speak openly about her identity and to advocate for greater understanding of trans people, at a time when very few were willing to.

Her words remind us that being trans is not about becoming someone new. It’s about living as who you have always been.

This LGBTQ History Month, we honor Christine and the many trailblazers whose courage paved the way for the progress we’ve made, and for the work still ahead. Learning our history is part of supporting our LGBTQ+ friends, family, and neighbors today.

Celebrating LGBTQ History Month: Alan Turing (1912-1954) 🏳️‍🌈

This October, we at PFLAG West Chester / Chester County are honoring the LGBTQ people whose contributions shaped our world, and whose stories deserve to be told in full. Today, we remember Alan Turing, a brilliant mathematician, logician, and pioneer of computer science.

During World War II, Turing played a central role at Bletchley Park, where he helped lead the effort to break the German Enigma code. Historians estimate his work shortened the war by years and saved millions of lives. He also laid the theoretical groundwork for modern computing and artificial intelligence, and his ideas still influence the technology we use every day.

Despite these achievements, Turing was prosecuted in 1952 under British laws that criminalized homosexuality. He was subjected to chemical castration as an alternative to prison, and he died in 1954 at the age of 41. He received a royal pardon in 2013, and in 2021 his portrait appeared on the Bank of England’s £50 note.

His story reminds us of the extraordinary contributions LGBTQ people have made throughout history, and of the real cost of discrimination. As his words on this graphic say: “Sometimes it is the people no one imagines anything of who do the things no one can imagine.”
