As we prepare for Sukkot, the holiday in which we build and live in temporary open-air huts, we’re reminded of how important it is to have a place to call home.

A place where you are safe, cared for and loved. A place where you are surrounded by familiar faces traditions, and laughter. A place where you belong.

This Sukkot, we are especially grateful to the TiKVA family around the world who helps give our children a home. A place to learn, grow, be loved and belong.

We’re slowly preparing for Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement, at TiKVA.

On Tuesday, our kindergarteners took a short walk to the nearby lake for Tashlich, a tradition of symbolically casting away sins by throwing crumbs into a body of water. On Wednesday, it was the school children’s turn to take part in this tradition.

Then on Thursday, we gathered for Kapparot, another ritual of atonement, as we continued our preparations for the sacred day.

In the days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, we are reminded of the power of kindness, compassion, and the way we care for one another.

TiKVA practices these values every day and in every moment: a teacher offering encouragement, a caregiver giving an extra hug, friends looking out for one another, and a child knowing there is always someone in their corner.

As we begin 5787, may we all find more opportunities to bring a little kindness into someone else’s day.

Our children celebrated Rosh Hashanah and welcomed the Jewish New Year together.

We are so grateful to our entire TiKVA family, our friends, supporters, trustees, teachers, caregivers and staff, whose dedication and generosity embrace our children throughout the year and allow for celebrations such as these.

In Odessa and Bucharest, our children are preparing to welcome Rosh Hashanah in the way Jewish families have for generations—gathering around the table, saying the brachot, dipping apples in honey, sharing a festive meal, and wishing one another a sweet New Year.

This year brought an unexpected challenge. Food generously donated for our children, including for their Rosh Hashanah meals, did not make it through customs.

But the tables will be set.

Thanks to the extraordinary response from so many of you, we are working to replace what was lost and make sure our children can welcome 5787 surrounded by the warmth and traditions of Rosh Hashanah.

And as the New Year begins, we want to thank you for being part of their lives—not only during the holidays, but throughout the year. Your friendship reaches their homes and classrooms, their dinner tables, and the Jewish traditions they are learning and carrying forward.

May 5787 bring sweetness to your home, health to those you love, and the peace we so deeply wish for our children, for Ukraine, for Israel, and for people everywhere.

This week’s Torah portion, Ki Tavo, begins with the offering of the first fruits, a moment of gratitude for what has grown and hope for what is still to come.

As our children begin a new school year, we’re reminded that every new beginning holds possibility: new things to learn, friendships to deepen, confidence to build, and dreams to discover.

May this Shabbat bring an appreciation of how far we’ve come and our hope for the future.
