As many of you know, our rescue is solely foster-based across Michigan and surrounding states. We are so lucky to have incredible foster families and volunteers all the way from the UP down to Detroit, as well as fosters in Illinois and Ohio! To celebrate these fosters and all of the dogs they’ve allowed us to help, we’re kicking off a foster mini-series. If you’ve been thinking about supporting rescues—whether you're curious about fostering, wondering how it all works, or looking for ways to make a difference—this series is for you! ✨
To help kick off this series, we teamed up with Muffin and her mom from Muffin for the Masses (check her out on Instagram!) to chat about fostering, rescue work, shelter dogs, and, of course, the work they do to support local rescue cats, too. 🐈⬛🐕
With so much overlap across animal rescue, we got to learn what fostering means to them, the incredible work they do, and how people can get involved in a plethora of ways—because this is a community cause. Helping animals comes in many forms: fostering, helping at events, volunteering skills like photography or social media, sharing posts, donating funds or items, offering time, educating others, and starting conversations.
While fostering is a vital way to help our dogs, it’s natural to have questions about the commitment. Many people feel they aren't ready, don't have enough time, lack the "perfect" home, or just aren't in a position to take on a pet full-time.
In chatting with Muffin, she reminded us that fostering doesn't have to be long-term, and having that autonomy allows rescues to help far more animals in need. They shared this wonderful perspective:
"Getting an animal into a foster home gets them into a better situation than where they were. Moving a dog out of a shelter into a home gives them a better decompression period. Taking in an owner surrender puts them into a loving environment where rescues can offer support, judgment-free."
With adoptions down nationwide and more animals in need than ever, supporting rescues in whatever way you can allows us all to play a part. That’s why we love Muffin for the Masses and the incredible work they do to lift up local rescues! 🐾
