Iowa Initiative for Sustainable Communities

Iowa Initiative for Sustainable Communities Students, faculty, and staff in these diverse fields bridge disciplinary boundaries to develop innovative approaches to complex challenges.

IISC is a campus-wide community engagement initiative that empowers students, faculty, staff, and community partners to co-create mutually beneficial partnerships in pursuit of vibrant, sustainable, and equitable futures. While Partnering, community needs are matched with the expertise and resources of university faculty, staff, and students through courses, independent studies, and research proje

cts. By taking students out of the classroom and into communities to complete real-world projects, IISC accomplishes two university-wide goals: enhancing sustainability across the state and transforming teaching and learning at the University of Iowa. IISC approaches the holistic nature of sustainability by drawing on many disciplines across campus, including urban and regional planning, civil & environmental engineering, business and marketing, law, art and art history, cinema arts, and more. A unique model for engagement and learning
The magnitude and depth of an IISC partnership make it, unlike any other resource or service at the University of Iowa. Whereas some community engagement might consist of a single project, IISC partnerships bring together faculty, staff, and students from across campus to complete 10-15 projects in a single community over the course of an academic year. Dozens of top UI students from various disciplines bring their talents, enthusiasm, and creativity to the partnership. For IISC community partners, focusing resources in their area results in a profound, transformative impact not only because of the number and quality of projects but also because citizens and community leaders coalesce around a shared vision and shared goals in order to make the partnership successful. For UI faculty and students, IISC means that they can expect to work in a community ready to take on big challenges, and prepared to be true collaborators. IISC is a competitive application process that requires a considerable amount of time and effort from prospective community partners, as well as a broad vision for the future. By the time students arrive on campus for the start of a new semester, community partners are ready and eager to begin working on the collaboration. IISC is also unique because professional staff work to ensure high-quality results for community partners. Final deliverables reflect not only the high-quality work from students but the professional expertise of IISC staff.

Weโ€™re incredibly grateful for our partnership with the Strategic Communication Campaigns class at the University of Iowa School of Journalism & Mass Communication! ๐ŸŽ“โœจ

Throughout the semester, these talented college seniors worked alongside Main Street West Branch to research best practices, develop strategic communications plans, and help streamline our own marketing and outreach efforts.

Their work also extended directly into our downtown business community, providing intensive 1:1 support and high-quality deliverables for FOUR amazing local businesses:
๐Ÿ“ Herb N' Lou's Pizza
๐Ÿ“ Main St. Sweets-WB
๐Ÿ“ Izzys Treasures
๐Ÿ“ Shop 121

Weโ€™re so thankful for the time, creativity, professionalism, and fresh perspective these students brought to the table. The tools and strategies they created will help strengthen our mission and support these businesses as they continue to grow, engage customers, and thrive in historic downtown West Branch.

Thank you to the students and faculty for investing your talents into our community!

Grateful for these kind words from Jackson County Economic Alliance Executive Director Kelley Brown. Building meaningful relationships with partners is one of the truly special parts of IISC partnerships! Thank you Kelley for sharing your wisdom and experience with University of Iowa School of Planning and Public Affairs capstone students as they work with JCEA this year!

I am sitting in my office once again with tears in my eyes, tears from my heart.

I just finished a ZOOM meeting with three U of I students I am working with. Their Capstone Project is working with the JCEA to improve the relevance and efficiency of what we do as well as enhance intergovernmental collaboration across the county. As we were saying our goodbyes before their winter break, they said how much they appreciated working with me this semester. I responded that I appreciated them as well. I too, have learned from them. I added that I hope they never lose their sense of being real and vulnerable, their passion for learning, and making a difference. That they would always share their knowledge and give to others. (Not everyone has that desire or ability to do that.) As I was finishing, my voice cracked and I had tears. I hope they really heard me and let my words rest in their soul.
I spend little bits of time, every day, thanking people, trying to be encouraging, never missing a chance in an email to tell someone to have a great day or that I appreciate them. It isn't lost on me that most people may think that they are just words I say, without true meaning. But, they do come from my heart, ALWAYS.
It is my hope, for us all, that we can take in every positive word, thought and action that comes our way. Pawzitivity is real. We need it. It makes us better people. It gives us purpose and a passion for life....... Pawzitivity - take it, and pass it on. Let's change the world, one positive action at a time.
