We sure love frogs at 💚 Huge congratulations to Jeremy Klank for representing our center at the XIII Congreso Latinoamericano de Herpetología in San José, Costa Rica.

Jeremy presented his collaborative research with the University of Costa Rica and The Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology, “Between bites and toxins: Does diet shape chemical defenses in a community of Costa Rican poison frogs?” and used the opportunity to connect with fellow researchers from across the region working in herpetology, conservation, and chemical ecology.

His conference participation also helped build momentum around ongoing research that began last fall through his Directed Research project, where he explored the diet and coloration of Costa Rican highland salamanders.

Preliminary findings suggest their coloration may act as a warning signal to predators, something often linked to toxic skin secretions in amphibians.

We’re proud to see his research shared on this stage and celebrated among such a great community of scientists 🐸

We’ve made it to the Semifinals!

The final Championship spot is on the line as Australia and Cambodia battle it out in Round 3.

But first — a huge shoutout to Turks & Caicos for an amazing Round 2 performance 🏆

With the largest amount raised in Round 2, they surged past the competition and secured an automatic spot in the Championship Round! Now the question is: who will join them?

Exciting news for 🎉 We’re so proud to celebrate Laura Bruce (), our Field and Lab Assistant at the Center for Tropical Island Biodiversity, on becoming a published author in the Journal of Ecotourism 📘

As an alumna of the semester program herself, this publication grew out of her Directed Research project and is a beautiful example of the kind of meaningful, field-based research that continues to grow through our centers.

Laura’s research explores community-based Indigenous tourism in Bocas del Toro, Panama, with a focus on how it can support Ngäbe communities beyond income alone, including social, psychological, political, and environmental empowerment.

One of the most powerful takeaways is that even with real challenges, these initiatives continue to florish because they create value that goes far beyond tourism revenue, such as community cohesion, cultural pride, and local leadership.

Laura thanks Leon Mach, our Center Director, for his guidance and support throughout the process.

Elephants of Southeast Asia is a 4-week, 4-credit summer program (July 6–Aug 4, 2026) that combines classroom learning with intensive fieldwork in Cambodia.

Students will observe semi-wild, rehabilitated elephants and examine elephant management and human–elephant conflict, all the while building practical research skills, from behavioral data collection to line-transect surveys and scientific communication.

The program also includes village homestays and cultural highlights in Phnom Penh and Angkor, connecting elephant ecology to the real-world social and policy landscapes that shape conservation.

Applications close May 1.
