PSA: Help Stop the Spread of New Zealand Mudsnails in the Driftless
New Zealand mudsnails are invading local waters, and it’s honestly crazy how easily they can spread. These tiny invasive snails can hitch a ride on boots, waders, boats, fishing gear, and even in small amounts of mud or water.
Because they are so small, simply picking them off by hand is not enough. Prevention is the best way to protect our streams and rivers.
To help, we are giving away FREE cleaning brushes in the shop. Stop in and grab one before your next trip to the water. You can also get free brushes from Coulee Region TU (Trout Unlimited) !
Mitigation techniques leaving the water:
- Inspect your gear and remove any plants, mud, or animals
- Drain all water from boats, buckets, boots, and equipment
- Scrub your gear with a stiff brush, especially seams, soles, and crevices
- Rinse with tap water when possible — keeping a water jug or spray bottle in your vehicle is a great idea
Before entering another stream or waterbody, switch to a completely clean set of gear if you can or disinfect your equipment by using one of these methods:
- Soak with Formula 409 for 10 minutes (you can pick up 409 at a ton of places)
- Freeze gear for at least 2 hours
- Wash with 212°F water or steam clean
- Formula 409 is our top recommendation, just make sure it is washed off before entering streams
Avoid felt-soled boots when possible, since they can trap tiny invasive species and are very difficult to clean. If you fish or wade often, consider keeping a second pair of boots or waders so you can rotate clean gear between trips.
Our Driftless waters are special. Let’s keep them that way.
