From Dennis Van der Meer’s vision of education, innovation, and connection to the worldwide coaching network PTR continues to support today, our mission has always been centered around empowering coaches at every stage of their career.

Over the last five decades, the industry has evolved tremendously - and PTR has continued evolving alongside it, creating new opportunities for coaches to learn, lead, and thrive around the world.

🎾 PTR Member Feature: Fred Wells Tennis & Education Center 🎾

The Fred Wells Tennis & Education Center (FWTEC) in Minnesota is more than a tennis facility - it’s a consistent and stabilizing force for its community during challenging times. Home to over 6,000 players and 2,000 youth participating in free NJTL programming, FWTEC faced major disruptions in early 2026. The tennis facility shares an intersection with the Whipple Federal Building that houses the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement Headquarters in Minnesota. The environment outside changed immediately, and the community was thrust into a difficult situation with multiple facility closures and disruptions to programming.

But when life turned sideways, the FWTEC community stepped up.
Players continued coming in to play despite the atmosphere outside. Others “donated back cancellation credits, made a general operating donation, shared professional expertise, brought in treats or lunch for staff, and supported mutual aid efforts” for families in need.

Community support also enabled FWTEC coaches to complete “275 home visits” to NJTL families in January and February, bringing groceries, hygiene products, household supplies, and games directly to families.

FWTEC coaches doubled down on their commitment by expanding their training in “trauma-informed approaches” to continue building resilience, connection, and stability through tennis.

“Coaches have more impact than they often realize. When tennis is rooted in community, it isn’t transactional, it’s transformative.”

Meet Board Member Jay Berger — former ATP World No. 7, elite coach, and lifelong leader in the game of tennis.

Jay’s impact on the sport spans decades, from competing at the highest level on the ATP Tour to developing some of today’s top American players and coaches. A former Davis Cup standout, Jay later built an incredible coaching career through the University of Miami, USTA Player Development, and years of mentoring elite professionals including Jack Sock and Reilly Opelka.

Today, Jay serves as Director of Athletics at The Club at Ibis, where he continues to shape the future of racquet sports through leadership, education, and player development.

We’re proud to have Jay’s experience, passion, and vision helping guide our organizations as we continue to support racquet sport coaches around the world.
