🌿 Big News for San Benito and ALL nature lovers! 🌿

The City of San Benito has been awarded a $750,000 grant from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission to improve San Benito Wetlands! 🐦🌸

This funding will help bring:
✅ New restroom & interpretive kiosk
✅ Pollinator gardens & native habitat enhancements
✅ Walking trails & benches with wheelchair access
✅ Bird blinds, environmentally friendly lighting, & more

"This grant allows us to protect one of San Benito’s most important nature areas while creating a safe and welcoming space for families to enjoy," said Mayor Ricardo Guerra.

The project also aligns with our 2025 Parks Master Plan, helping expand green spaces, improve amenities, and preserve local ecosystems for generations to come! 🌳

"We want to thank our city staff for their hard work on this grant and all the community members who joined us for our public input sessions," Guerra said. "Thanks to you, this project is moving forward!"

The next RGV Botany Meetup will be at La Sal del Rey on Sunday, January 25!

We’ll be exploring the area starting from the Brush Line Road entrance trail, taking time to observe and talk about the unique plants that grow in this saline landscape.

We’ll be doing a short 1.5-mile round-trip walk to the salt lake. Closed-toe shoes or good walking shoes are recommended, especially if it happens to rain beforehand since the salt can get slippery. Bring plenty of water, sun protection, snacks, and comfy hiking clothes.

As always, these meetups are a great opportunity for a native plant or seed swap. If you’d like to bring something to share, please make sure it’s a native plant—no ornamentals, cultivars, or invasives.

Native Plant Project

The Native Plant Project's primary objective is the compilation and dissemination of information about plants native to the lower Rio Grande Valley. The NPP seeks to increase scientific knowledge of native plant propagation and phenology for both horticultural and natural revegetation purposes. The NPP promotes the conservation of local native plants, habitats, plant communities, wildlife, and environment. The NPP seeks to increase the public's knowledge and awareness of the importance of native plants in the lower Rio Grande Valley by encouraging their use in public and private landscaping. At 7:30 PM, every 4th Tuesday of the month (excluding the months of June, July, and August), the Native Plant Project presents an educational and entertaining program centered around native plants of the Rio Grande Valley presented by members of the community. NPP Board members meet at 6:30 PM before each program. The public is welcome to attend both the board meetings and programs free of charge. We try our best to provide various RGV native plants and RGV native plant seeds at each meeting for members of the community to grow at home. We are a non-profit organization and donations are gladly accepted.
