The Valley Nature Center is an organization that exists because there have been a dedicated group of individuals who have come together for almost 20 years to turn a "vacant lot" in the middle of Weslaco into what it is today. Without their vision, their hard work and without the financial support of many individuals and organizations, that vacant lot might well be the site of an apartment complex

today. Instead it is a green gem in the middle of the city that is now playing a significant part in educating both residents and visitors about the South Texas native landscape and the rich assortment of critters that it supports.

What an incredible day at the Valley Nature Center!

We are excited to share that the launch of our newest Tails and Trails book, Bugs on the Job, was a tremendous success! Combined with our Super Saturday event, it was a wonderful day filled with learning, laughter, community, and fun.

Events like these are only possible because of amazing community partners. We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Unidos Contra La Diabetes, Driscoll Children's Health, Weslaco High School National Honor Society, South Texas College Nursing Program, AmeriCorps, and the Food Bank RGV for helping make this event so special.

Most importantly, thank you to everyone who attended. Your enthusiasm, participation, and support are what make our programs meaningful and successful. Seeing families learning together, exploring nature, and celebrating literacy and healthy living is exactly why we do what we do.

Thank you for helping make this event a huge success. We can't wait to see you at the next one!

Due to the recent, and much needed, rainfall, our trails have become muddy, with some areas experiencing flooding. For the safety of our visitors, Valley Nature Center will be closed for the remainder of today, Saturday, May 23, and tomorrow, Sunday, May 24. We will resume normal business hours on Tuesday, May 26.

We wish everyone a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend!

Things are growing beautifully at the Weslaco Seed and Sprout Community Garden!

Right now, we have tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, sage, basil, and rosemary thriving in the garden, filling the space with vibrant colors and amazing aromas. It is always exciting to see what can flourish when we come together to grow something special!

One of the best things about visiting the Valley Nature Center is that you never know what you’re going to discover, from blooming plants to fresh herbs to butterflies, birds, and unexpected moments of wonder!

Come by the nature center and explore with us, you never know what you’re going to find!

Our Adventure Thicket was created to be a place where children can learn, explore, get their hands dirty, use their imaginations, and most importantly, have fun.

Interactive spaces like our rain table help children discover how nature works through hands-on play and exploration. Unfortunately, someone recently chose to steal the shower faucet head from this educational feature.

While it may seem like a small thing, it is disappointing. These spaces are built for children and families to enjoy together, and every piece serves a purpose in creating meaningful learning experiences.

More importantly, what example are we setting for our children when we take things that do not belong to us?

We will replace it and restore the exhibit because our kids deserve these opportunities to learn and explore. But the truth is, we shouldn’t have to.

We appreciate everyone who respects and supports community spaces like the Valley Nature Center. Together, we can continue creating places where children can connect with nature, learn through play, and build lasting memories.
