While still not making a definitive call, London Marathon organizers are finally saying out loud what everyone else already knows: the October 4 event may be cancelled outright, and 2021 may have to be moved from the traditional April date to October.

Here's some tentative good news on the racing front. The Hamburg marathon and half is planning to run on September 13 with new protocols for COVID safety. The much larger Berlin marathon, scheduled for two weeks later, cancelled their event earlier this week, citing the impossibility of putting on a major event, safely, and also citing Germany's ban on gatherings larger than 5,000 people. Once you dig down into the article, however, note the Hamburg event's chief organizer's comment, "We are OPTIMISTIC that the Haspa Marathon Hamburg will be started on 13 September." [emphasis added] As with all fall 2020 races...stay tuned.

Another one bites the dust. How are you dealing with the cancellation of your key races in 2020? Virtual races? Focusing (and hoping) on your 2021 schedule? Switching to Netflix marathons?

After initially indicating that the race will not happen as planned, organizers have fully canceled the World Marathon Major.

I think we all thought this might be coming.

Despite dropping infection rates in the region, organizers and city officials decided the risks of running a race with 50,000 participants were too high.

Are you ready for Runwell's Forbidden Five (asynchronous) 5K?

Pandemic-induced social distancing makes traditional races pretty much impossible. Virtual runs and “races” seem like the only alternative for now. But let’s be honest: virtual runs can’t really be races if everyone runs different courses with varying elevation changes, surfaces, turns, obstacles, and other factors that make it impossible to compare times and rank finishers. If you’ve been waiting for a real race where you can throw down times against people running the same course and conditions, get ready for this. Caron Treatment Centers
