Caron Treatment Centers and Release Recovery Foundation have
created a scholarship in Nic's name to bring community, inclusiveness,
relevance and financial scholarships to those in the LGBTQIA community
when considering recovery at Caron Treatment. After maintaining sobriety for nearly 6 months, Nic experience a derailed period of days while managing his mental health and unfortunately, fell (wi
th a fentanyl cut, the new epidemic, as the culprit). While our lives are consumed with negotiating and understanding the grieving process, we thank you in advance for your sympathies. We feared this outcome as a possibility and have had years of conditioning through our parent and therapeutic networks. Still, we are shattered yet, life goes on. I am not writing this post to announce our loss but to tell of a level of light that has shined on us due to a virtuous energy that Nic had been emanating. While at in-patient treatment and more recently residing at post-treatment sober houses, Nic, who was gay, became a welcoming and inclusive entity for young recovering adults in the LGBTQIA+ community upon their entering into treatment. Nic was passionate about gay rights and was destined for a career in sober awareness and mental health therapy. The renowned Caron Treatment Centers in Pennsylvania and Release Recovery, a sober house in Yorktown Heights remembered Nic as a helpful resource within group meetings. For this reason the two entities decided to create the Nic Pagano Scholarship Fund that aims to provide better access to help for a group statistically more likely to need it and less likely to find it. Overdose deaths in the LGBTQIA+ community are 30% higher than that in the heterosexual equivalent which, in 2021 is up almost 25%. Karen and I hope to dedicate a portion of our lives in helping to support young adults in recovery and to bring attention to the vitality of the foundation. I certainly will create music related benefits and Karen will resource the fine art community to promote its relevance and mission to create financial scholarships for those who cannot afford acute addiction treatment. Our son's name lives on. A dedicated Caron Treatment Centers webpage has been created. Additionally, Nic Pagano Scholarship Fund Facebook and Instagram pages will be built for info and updates.
