American Axle Math: Equal is Wrong!

The company proposal is to provide a “raise” to $25.75 per hour by 2030. Will workers be better off, be better able to buy the things they need in 2030? I hate to do it but let’s ask our friend AI…

A sum of $14.50 in 2008 is projected to be worth roughly $25.26 to $27.09 in 2030 in terms of purchasing power. This conversion uses historical U.S. inflation data and projects forward based on standard annual inflation scenarios

The reason I used the figure of $14.50 in 2008 is because that is when workers took a pay cut from $28.00 per hour to $14.50. Over the last eighteen years they have clawed their way to the current top pay of $22 per hour. The company proposal of $25.75 is at the bottom end of projected purchasing power, meaning workers would get a raise that allows them less ability to buy the things they need than they have today! Of course, that is if they can fight off any increases in health care insurance which the company has also proposed. American Axle math is the kind of subtraction that keeps workers falling behind.

She cited the efforts of USW Local 6511 President Al King to help his members after a layoff. I can relate. In 2008 the Chrysler St. Louis minivan plant experienced layoffs and eventual closure. Many of their suppliers closed as a result. At the time, I was president of UAW Local 1760 which represented the 550 hourly workers that built the seats for the minivan. For several years, our plant was the largest employer in Franklin County, Mo.

Like Mr. King, when the first layoffs occurred, local union leadership began trying to help these folks that were now unemployed through no fault of their own. We organized job fairs, held rallies asking Chrysler to “Build them where you sell them,” and worked with state and federal elected officials to access assistance programs.

TAA helped these workers attend college, trade school, and other specialized training. Other benefits under the TAA umbrella were relocation assistance and temporary wage support in cases where their new job did not pay as much as the job they lost by making up the difference during a transition period.

Are UAW Members on the Financial Edge?

https://uawlocal2250.net/live/index.php/2026/05/29/are-uaw-members-close-to-the-financial-edge/

Are members of UAW Local 2250 and other union members on the edge? Last September, this site compared the median wage of Missouri with the base wage of a full-scale member. The picture is a little better…

Let’s compare:

UAW Annual Pay: $81,473

Missouri Median Pay: $56,200

Difference: UAW + $25,273

Well, Well, Well a UAW member at GM is well above the median salary in Missouri – $25,273 above!

But, what about union dues? Yeah, the UAW member would of paid $1,175 in dues for the year. So let’s subtract those dues from their annual pay to see if it pays to be a member.

$25,273 – $1,175 = $24,098 above the Missouri median pay after union dues!

NPR just published and you can listen to This is how close American households are to the financial edge... The report concluded that a mere

TAA is a No-Brainer, Fight For It!

He has every right to be angry. I’m livid, too, and so are hundreds of thousands of workers across numerous industries—farming, glass, mining, steel and tires, to name a few—who got kicked in the gut when Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) ended for no reason in 2022.

The program’s demise ripped away a lifeline from workers who lose jobs because of the adverse effects of global trade. Prime example: the Iron Range miners, who produce the taconite, or iron ore, that’s used to make steel for an auto industry roiled by trade disputes.

“Not having it is nothing short of a nightmare,” King said, noting that miners and workers in many other sectors face periodic threats to their jobs over long careers.

“It blows my mind that we don’t have this safety net,” he added. “It’s a no-brainer.”
