Hart Comfort House of Allegany County Volunteers at the Hart Comfort House provide compassionate, around-the-clock care for individuals entering the final three months of life.

Working alongside a dedicated care team, volunteers offer comfort, companionship, and dignity during this time. Comfort House of Allegany County, Inc., a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation known as Hart Comfort House, offers free comfort care for those in their last three months of a terminal illness. Comfort care honors the well-being of every person and respects the dignity of human life. Hart Com

fort House, designed to be a welcoming and comforting place, is an alternative to the hospital or a nursing home when a person can no longer be looked after in his or her own home. Hart Comfort House’s staff and trained volunteers are able to care for two residents at a time, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They provide warm and compassionate care and support, not only to residents, but also to residents’ families and friends. Hart Comfort House serves people living in Allegany County, but may also consider residents from neighboring counties. Admission to Hart Comfort House is based solely on need, regardless of age, s*x, race religion or s*xual orientation. Each case is evaluated carefully and priority is given to people who have the greatest need, based upon their medical situation and the feasibility of care giving at home. The Hart Comfort House residence is located at 141 East State Street, Wellsville, NY; the home was donated by the family of Mary Ellen and Gerald Hart and has since been fully renovated and adapted. Hart Comfort House opened on January 1, 2012. From Sharon Tyrell - Volunteer Coordinator

All of our life experiences lead us to be exactly where we are meant to be. For me, having the opportunity to work with our volunteers and residents is a privilege. Most of my professional career has been in the setting of human resources, working with employees and supervisors, assisting them by giving them tools to bring out the best in themselves and each other. In 2008, I was by my father’s side when he died at home. This experience had a profound impact on me, leading me to want to be present for others as they go through this sacred process. Being able to support our volunteers as they support our residents and their families is a place where I can share my gifts and experience. I am grateful that Hart Comfort House fills this need in the community and that I can play a small part in providing this comfort. I am the lucky mother of two wonderful teenagers and have lived in Alfred since 2004. Although I was raised in central New York, I have come to call Allegany County home and look forward to continuing my work with the Hart Comfort House. I would love to share our program with you if you are interested in volunteering. There are so many ways for each person to give: resident care, companionship, gardening, housekeeping, fund raising, and spreading the word about the Hart Comfort House — all you need is the desire to give of yourself. You will find you get as much, if not more, in return.

End-of-life care focuses on maximizing comfort, managing pain, and preserving dignity for individuals in the final stages of a terminal illness. During this time, families can expect a gradual shift away from curative treatments toward comprehensive symptom control and holistic support.

Physically, individuals often experience increased fatigue, changes in breathing patterns, and a natural decline in food and fluid intake as the body prepares to transition. Emotionally and spiritually, this stage highlights the profound human need for a peaceful atmosphere, meaningful connection, and gentle companionship. Because around-the-clock caregiving can become physically and financially exhausting for families at home, specialized comfort care settings offer essential guidance to ensure no one has to navigate this challenging journey alone.

In Wellsville, New York, the Hart Comfort House steps into this space by offering a warm, two-bed residential home designed to be a peaceful alternative to a hospital or nursing facility. We provide 24-hour comfort care to individuals in their last three months of a terminal illness, with admission based entirely on medical need.

Operating under the hospice philosophy, our staff and trained volunteers handle daily practical tasks—such as cooking, laundry, and hands-on personal care—so family members can step back from being demanding primary caregivers and simply focus on being present with their loved one. Backed by a supervising medical director, a fully equipped family kitchen, and a peaceful surrounding memorial garden, we preserve human dignity while actively supporting friends and families through the initial bereavement process.

Part of our growth at the Comfort House of Allegany County has been to establish a memorial garden and walkway.

After spring, summer and fall of planning, and hundreds of donated hours of work in planting and landscaping, our walkway and Memorial Garden were ready.

Individuals or families may have bricks (for the garden) engraved with names of people who will always remain in our memories, bring light to our hearts, and give courage as we continue on our journeys.

The money donated to purchase bricks will help us continue to provide comfort for residents and their families.

Brick sizes are:

8" x 8" for $100

8" x 4" for $50

If you are interested in having your loved one forever part of our beautiful garden, please contact the Hart Comfort House.

Where the Genesee flows through the valley so green,
A quiet descends on the small town scene.
The banners of heroes line Main Street with pride,
For the sons and the daughters who fought and who died.
At Veterans Park, where the stone monuments stand,
We gather to honor the brave of our land.
The bugle plays Taps through the warm morning air,
A community bound in a heartbeat of prayer.
By the Memorial Bridge, where the waters run deep,
We cast down our wreaths for the sailors who sleep.
From Woodlawn’s soft hills to the Sacred Heart grounds,
The flutter of red, white, and blue flags abounds.
No names are forgotten, no sacrifice lost,
This valley remembers the ultimate cost.
To the fallen of Wellsville, our promise stays true:
We live in the freedom protected by you.

The room is draped in a different light,
A glow that bypasses the window frame.
To sit in the center of their night
Is to be the keeper of their name.
It is a beauty, heavy and deep,
To watch over love as it falls asleep.
The breath is a labor, a rhythmic sound,
The rattle of pebbles in a shallow stream.
Long pauses stretch, profound and bound,
As they drift between the world and a dream.
You are the anchor, the hand they hold,
As the story of a lifetime is finally told.
You watch the mottled shadows creep,
A marble map on the cooling skin.
It’s a sacred vigil you’ve come to keep,
In the space where the light begins to thin.
To moisten their lips with a gentle hand
Is to walk them to the edge of an unknown land.
Their eyes may fix on a distant place,
Seeing a sunrise you cannot see.
A sudden clarity smooths the face,
The ultimate act of being free.
There is no fear in this quiet room,
Only the warmth of a soul in bloom
And then comes the sigh that does not return,
A soft, silver bridge to the great unknown.
In the hollow silence, you finally learn
That no one truly departs alone.
For you were the witness, the hand, and the light,
Walking them home through the velvet of night.
It is a beauty that words cannot hold,
To be the last love that a soul receives—
To wrap them in peace as the stars unfold,
Like the quiet descent of the autumn leaves.
You are left in the stillness, sacred and deep,
With a grace that is yours forever to keep.
